Not Ham but related. Can anybody recommend a good scanner to listen in on local LEO and other activity? Just had two patrol cars with lights a flash'in and a fire truck racing down my quiet block and I'm curious to what's going on, lol...

A lot of emergency services are moving to digital radios so the old school (affordable) scanners don't work so well any more. Use the cell phone app like PoP recommended.Beer is like porn, you can buy it but it's more fun to make your own

A standard cheap Baofeng UV-5R can be had for less than $27.00, and be programmed to listen like a scanner. USMC or myself can program it for you and fill up all 128 memories with scanner channels, as well as FRS/GMRS if wanted. Yes it won't work on Trunk-Tracking Systems to hear 'all' communications, but it should work fine for hearing the 'dispatch' frequency that the agency uses.
Good enough for the application you want it to fill! As a bonus it can be used on the Amatuer Radio bands after you study and get your Technician License!
