What to do when the power goes out at night?

Asking this question because my power went out at midnight a few days ago. This was a planned outage for work to be done so I knew about it but it got me thinking .

Since I knew about it I had a flashlight next to me but had it been an unscheduled outage I would have had to go further to get it. I got a good deal on these http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0019F...110_SY165_QL70 a few weeks ago and actually put one in the bathroom so you can still use toilet or shower with no light. It came in handy for me too when I had to get ready for work.

I also don't have a generator either but hope to get one when I get a house. Something else I have been looking at are these flashlights you plug into outlet (kids room, hallway, kitchen?) And when the power goes out they automatically turn on. That way you have light and can easily find them http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0039U...&pi=SY200_QL40 . Anyone have any?

So that's my thoughts on making life easier and winter is coming up so that is always a time on when more outages typically happen. Speaking of which might not be bad time of year to check smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector batteries.

Those always come in handy, I also have a ups (uninterrupted power supply) for my computer, modem, and router. Its set up to turn off computer after 5 minutes to keep WiFi working for long period of time.

I have a few battery powered lanterns, which I feel are awesome. They're very bright. I've run these on camping trips in crazy weather and they're always reliable. The batteries last a really long time too.

I like the Amerelle you listed because it lights up as an emergency light as soon as the power goes out. I think I'll get a couple of those. They'd be helpful in finding the Rayovac lanterns.. LOL

Exactly lol, easy to find when you need them and guaranteed charged lol, nothing worse then stubbing toe or getting flashlight that is nearly dead, that's also why I run lithium's in my flashlights.

In the event of an emergency power outage, my phone is within arms reach and has a flashlight app on it. It'll at least get me through the house without tripping over kid's toys until I can get to my mag light.

No, I use the Apple app, not a 3rd party.

Oh OK just checking. You should get a streamlight flashlight or something that takes cr123 for next to bed. Batteries have 10 year shelf life. Also not real effected by cold so could be good thing to leave one in glove box too.

If the power goes out at night, I just roll over and go back to sleep. I do keep a flashlight next to the bed. Most of my lighting is powered by an off-grid solar system, so a power outage doesn't effect me much, except for the annoyance of hearing a neighbor's generator running.

I use my 40 Watt Solar Generator to power anything that I may need:

I have three UPS's that handle my Main PC, HTPC, and CCTV Cameras. So all of those are also good to go. I currently have about 150 Amp Hours worth of batteries charged up and ready for an outage. I plan on increasing my capabilities over time as my budget permits.

As far as illumination goes, I have 20+ devices that output light. Flashlights, Lanterns, 12 volt LED Lights, and more. I can easily light up my entire apartment for a week or longer if an extended outage happened again. When the N/E USA lost power, I had my internet up, as well as lighting for the entire week. The only thing I had a problem with was having to transfer all my perishable foods to coolers, which wasn't too much of a hassle as my local fire dept. has a ice machine that's powered by their backup generator. So a quick trip down there and I had ice to keep all the food from going bad.
