  • smoke and carbon monoxide detectors?

    Couple questions.....

How many do you need of each ?
Are the combo ones good? Not sure why you would mount it high though I thought carbon monoxide detectors need to be low.
    Cheapest place to buy them?

Smoke detectors: one for each floor (normally placed up high)
CO detectors: not sure of recommendation but I have one on each floor (placed low, CO is heavier than air)

I wouldn't do combination devices (see placement advice above).

Buy quality units (not sure of cheapest place to get them).

My advice would be stop into the fire house closest to your home with a box of donuts/cookies/pie/etc, introduce yourself, tell them you just moved into the neighborhood, and ask their advice (hell, they may even have devices that they will give you).

I joined a support group to help me deal with my social anxiety but I just can't seem to work up the nerve to go to a meeting......

I have smoke detectors that are wired in, along with battery backup. Insurance companies like this.

I recommend putting them in the basement near the furnace also.

Smoke needs to be one outside each bedroom door, one by the furnace, and one on a level that might not have a bedroom, placed by the stairs.

CO detector should be one on each level.

I would get quality detectors independent of each other. Not combined.

Ideally you'd hard wire the smoke detectors in series so they'd all go off if one detects smoke. It gives earlier warning if there's a fire at the other end of your home and can't hear that detector.

OK wasn't sure if each room needed a co2 or not.

If two bedroom doors are next to each other would 1 smoke suffice for both?

Each bedroom should have a smoke detector no matter how close they are to each other.

Inside or outside each bedroom? Assuming fire doesn't start in room I could place 1 detector to cover smoke coming from rest of house .

At my dads place he has one in each room and one in hallway.

My smoke detectors are also hardwired. One upstairs, one down. I have a CO detector in a plug in the upstairs hallway, but there's not one downstairs. I should get another.

I have one smoke/co combo detector on each floor hallway, and one in each bedroom. co is neutral, not heavy like co2.

You want a smoke detector in each room (or area) that has the ability to be closed off to the rest of the house by a door.

Tip: don't put a smoke detector near the kitchen.

How far away should it be? I was thinking around corner from entrance to kitchen.

The best answer I can give you is "far enough." It'll really depend on the layout of the house.
