Actually, for those that are interested in using amateur radio in a preparedness sense, it would be a good idea to visit your local radio group's Field Day event. Field Day usually takes place during the last weekend in June, and groups throughout the country participate in the event. The object of the Field Day is to set up a station using emergency power and try to make as many contacts as possible with other groups, during a two day time period. Some of the Field Day stations can be very elaborate, with many radios and many antennas. Field Day stations also score extra points by promoting the hobby through public media. At the larger Field Day stations there will be a public relations person on site to explain what's happening and to answer questions. Watch for more information in your local newspapers and TV stations about where the local group will set up. Field Day stations are often set up at parks or fire stations. What's nice about visiting a local Field Day site is you can see the many different ways of setting up a portable station, and they'll give you a chance to participate, if you're so inclined.
I've participated in a couple of group Field Days, one was at Horseshoe Lake in the Adirondacks, and another one was at a local observatory. I've also done it by myself using a solar powered radio station.

Orange County one is on Cronomer Hill near Newburgh. The Orange County Amateur Radio Club is a good bunch of folk- they actually meet up in Cornwall once a month. Me and my son used to go just got too busy.
