  • Dash Cameras options - need help

So guys I wanted to guy a dash camera but there are so many options that I am getting dizzy. I need your help.
I see some that look really easy but somewhat cheese and others that look they could work but not sure about installation, redundancy, etc...

    These are my requirements....

-Dual camera, one forward and the other want back with a wide angle of the passenger cabin.
-Easy to mount and to connect. Still some minor installation is fine as I have power access above and around the rear view mirror.
-It must record sound as well.
-Ideally I want the system to store the streaming video to a 2nd device for backup or even stream into the cloud via phone so the images can not be stolen or lost after
    an accident or fire.

I don't mind more sophisticated systems with even more cameras and wide angles and outside microphones. But it must be proven to work.

I doubt you can go wrong with any of the more expensive units (more features).

Even the el cheapo units made in China record sound. I picked up an older discontinued unit last year for $38. It has very nice video quality and decent enough sound for a unit that is about the size of a pack of cigarettes. I have it mounted up high on the windshield in front of the rear view mirror so it is practically unnoticeable from outside the car.

I picked up two other cheap discontinued units for $35 each that I am testing out to put in my other vehicles, and while they are slightly lacking in video quality compared to the other one, they will get the job done.

The biggest issue with these cheap units is that they claim to take a certain size micro SD or SD card, say up to 32 GB or 64 GB, but in actuality it has trouble correctly recognizing the maximum size. I just pop in a 16 GB card which is enough for 3 hours or so of recording. Good enough for me.

IMO, Lukas is the tits if you dont mind price tags. If I had the money, this is what I'd get. I run a Mobius. I like it, no problems.

Good timing on this. I was about to ask the same questions, except I'm looking to go cheap. I'd like to stay in the $50 ish range, but I'm a bit flexible on that.

How they stream video and store it somewhere else like other hidden device or cloud?
..you see camera detects motion. supect enters the car. Suspect seals car and/or camera. VIDEO IS GONE! LOL. ... unless you have a way to later recover it from a hidden location or a server/cloud somewhere.

Apparently there is such a thing as a wireless memory card reader.

                http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_no...0Card%20Reader

I'm not 100% sure how it works. Perhaps instead of inserting the SD card into the dashcam, you put it into the reader and then plug the reader into the dashcam via usb. This would allow you to potentially hide the reader elsewhere, though there would still be a cable visibly plugged into the dashcam. I know one of the cheap units I just purchased has an option in the menu of either "PC Cam" or "Disk Drive", I assume via the usb cable connection.

Are you really worried that much about your car being stolen? A good car security system would take care of that. Instead I would focus on getting a smaller dashcam that won't be easily noticed by a smash and grab type of break-in. The placement in front of the rearview mirror seems to be a popular way of mounting one discretely.

If you really want a dual camera dashcam with wi-fi, I could only find one on dashcamtalk.com. The technology is still fairly new, so it may be a few years until there are more options.

The car being stolen is not the only way hard evidence could be damaged or even snatched from you. You wan that video to be 100% protected no matter what happens.

NYF had a lengthy thread on this too. I never did get one. Worried about putting in my work car.

I am still looking for something that can save the video to a remote device. Something hidden for redundancy. Streaming would be too costly not just
the devices but the bandwith and signal will not be there as you drive.

I am reading and reading but I am going crazy. my eyes!

I don't think there are many dashcams out there that meet your requirements, if any.

Most don't save anything remotely. If you find one that does, post it up here.

I am surprised. Lets say the camera catches something really important.
then lets say that camera is damaged or removed.
Then, what do you have? ...yes you got it, nothing!
If the video is important I am thinking you would want it in more than one place or something like a black box.

Dash cams are a relatively newer technology, consumer-wise. Given time, it will advance in features.

In the meantime, start your own dash cam company, and push it along.
