I guess this is as good a thread as any to ask...
This is our second winter in our home. Last year we got ice dams pretty bad! I'd say at one point we had a solid block of ice about 12 inches thick above the front stoop. This year someone got us a roof rake as an early Christmas gift. From what I've read you only need to do about 3-4 feet from the edge of the roof up and only in places where ice dams are prone to form. What I've been doing is going around the whole house with it and a 2,100 square foot home takes a while, lol!
My question is this. Am I wasting my time going around the whole house with the rake? Should I just worry about areas that are prone to ice dams? We have four valleys along the north side but the south side is all the same angle and direction. Oh, and after I finished I realized I buried the oil filler tube so I had to go dig that out...SOB!
I'm sore from snowblowing, shoveling and raking twice today that I'm wondering if I'm wasting a lot of time other than getting good exercise.I could be wrong...it's happened before and it'll happen again.

I just finished over 2 hours of snowblowing and roof raking myself. I don't really have to do the whole roof either but it is no big deal since it is a small ranch.
What you really need to do to fix your damn ice dam problem is insulate the hell out of the attic. Escaping heat is what causes the ice dams. That, and a metal roof will help.
Who wants to buy me a metal roof? lol"I ask, Sir, what is dinner? It is the whole chicken. To pluck the chicken is the best and most effectual way to prepare them."

That is a NICE looking bunch of meat!
I can still find a use for my thumb, even though it no longer has a hole to finger.
I could have been enjoying his nuts.

We have about R-65 in the attic since about this time last year. In retrospect I was unaware of how much insulation helps, plus the roof rake this year. Putting the insulation in the attic last winter was a ***** and a half but soooo glad I did it! I can't imagine what the fuel oil cost would be for this place otherwise!I could be wrong...it's happened before and it'll happen again.

There once was a man called Meke
Who went outside to take a leak.
What he didn't know
Is that he was pissing in snow
And couldn't get rid of the yellow for a week!"I ask, Sir, what is dinner? It is the whole chicken. To pluck the chicken is the best and most effectual way to prepare them."

Well, I got about 14 or 15 inches of snow, kind of hard to tell now that it is blowing around like crazy.
It's all cleaned up now but I'll probably have at least another foot of snow in the morning in the driveway because all the snow on the lake blows off the ice, up the hill, and then dumps in my driveway!"I ask, Sir, what is dinner? It is the whole chicken. To pluck the chicken is the best and most effectual way to prepare them."

but the weather outside was so brutal
that my balls shrunk to the size of peas
and my wiener caved in like a frightened turtle
