  • interesting Netflix documentary

2 nights ago I watched a documentary on Netflix called, "The Happy People - A Year in the Taiga".

It was about life around Russia's Taiga forest. Lots of focus on subsistence lifestyle, trapping, etc. One of the characters they focus on rolls around on an ancient snow machine with an SKS slung over his shoulder.

    Highly recommended.

Amazing documentary. I love the way he carefully chooses the tree to make his skiis. And the way they make tar from bark to fight the black flies and mosquitos. And what about the ancient traps and the way they manage the ax? They move like they are part of mother nature. Perhaps because in the taiga there is not air lift Alaska. You make a mistake, you die.

Thought the skis were incredible, the way they made and used wedges. Pure poetry for sure.

The guy said the government abandoned them in the taiga to die and how they survived the first winter.
Then after that was adapting to a very primitive yet effective way of life.
Those guys are as tough as nails. No BS there.
