Interesting. I tried a magnesium bar a few times and couldn't get enough shavings on an average day to get them going. Might be something new to try.

Lots of fires with a pound of magnesium.
Just to throw it out there, though, ferrocerium and misch metal rods have a high magnesium content, and shavings from them work well.
