  • Lets talk about situational awareness

Here is another topic with TONS of info, so lets see what we can come up with!

Situational awareness is basically being aware of your surroundings and knowing what is normal behavior for an area and what is not. For example in a lot of cities you have neighborhoods with a lot of people out and about on the streets day or night. If you notice that suddenly people are going inside then that should be a Red Flag that something is not right and to get yourself out of there as well.

One thing you can do is make a game out of it. When I was Stationed in D.C. I had to stand outside of the Commandant of the Marine Corps home because they were doing work on it and they had scaffolding up. Lets face it, that kind of post can get pretty boring just standing outside. For those of you who don't know his house is actually on a regular city street not inside of a base or anything.

Anyways one of the Sergeants of the Guard (SOG) told us to play what if games in our heads out there if we started getting bored as that would help us maintain vigilance. I remember seeing a vagrant walk by across the street on the side walk. As he was walking next to a car I thought to myself "what would I do if he broke into that car in front of me". I told myself that I would get on the radio with dispatch and inform them of the situation and keep an eye on it but only enough so that I did not get distracted from my main duty of guarding the front of the house. Sine the vagrant was across the street I knew I did not have any jurisdiction either.

Sure as Peshitta after going over that scenario in my head the vagrant came back with an umbrella. I thought it was odd since it was not raining out. He walked up the the car and I saw that the front passenger window was open a little bit. The vagrant took the umbrella with the strap still around it and inserted it into the window. he then hit the button to extend it but since the strap was on it didn't actually open up. He used the extended umbrella to hit the unlock button in car and then went into the back seat to lay down! I was shocked frankly that he did that and especially in front of me lol. This was like 10:30 am when it happened and I got on the radio and told dispatch so they could call the police. All the while the car alarm was now going off. Shortly after I was relieved to go to lunch and whenever they were giving status updates I could still hear the alarm going off lol.

Other things I noticed were vans working on houses nearby with license plates of states that weren't Maryland or Virginia so I reported those as well.

Another time in D.C. I was coming up out of the subway at night right before it closed and there was a guy standing at the top about 1.5 times my size at least. I saw him as I was nearing the top and there wasn't much I could do without running down the escalator not even knowing what type of threat he was lol. Anyways when I get to the top he grabbed my forearm pretty firmly and asked for money. Instead of freaking out or anything I told him that I couldn't check to see if I had any money while he was grabbing my arm so he let go. Once he did I quickly patted my pockets and said "Nope no money" and turned and walked in opposite direction of him.

Here are some general tips I know and look forward to seeing what the rest of you have.

First one is that when you go to a restaurant or other sit down type place your best to sit with your back to a wall so that no one can come up from behind you.

Only walk in well lit areas if possible.

If you are staying in a hotel try and stay between the 2nd and 7th floor. Reasoning being that you are safer from drive by shootings and other threats and most fire truck ladders can reach up to the 7th floor or so I was told.

If you are in armed services don't wear your uniform out in town, your only making yourself a target to terrorists or criminals that may commit a crime where you are.

Don't be afraid to make eye contact with people on the street. It shows that you are not afraid and not an easy target. That said don't stare at them like you have a problem with them lol.

Another idea I have had was that if I was approached by someone with a knife or firearm I would pretend to fake some sort of illness. I think that this may catch them off guard allowing you enough time to escape or at least draw your firearm to defend yourself.

    So what do you got?

You should go through places like you drive your motorcycle.
I think it is called preventive visualization. Like ...what is the worse it can happen on this turn, here an exit, there a car! always look for an exit plan.

I've always been one to try and pay attention to my surroundings. And ditto on the restaurant thing. I CANNOT sit where I can't see the primary entrance as well as the vast majority of the place. I've refused to take a table before as it wasn't suitable to my OPSEC needs. My wife always waits when we get our table for me to figure out where I want to be and then everyone else sits. I also try and keep my right side out, as that's my carry side. I'd hate to have to ever draw from the inside of a booth and muzzle cover the whole family on the way to the target.

I find that I'm constantly trying to position myself in a way that my concealed carry is accessible to only me, and won't be obstructed in the event that I'm caught by surprise. Things like when fueling the truck (the gas door is on the drivers side), I'll gently lean against the truck with my left side facing the rear of it, which is only about a foot away. If someone was to try and pull a sneak attack from around the back, I can still access my carry piece.

I never use my phone while wandering around in public. I can't believe how many people I see on a daily basis that are walking with their face buried in a screen and ear buds in listening to music. Blind and deaf is NO WAY to be vigilant of your surroundings.

While I've never had to use it, I usually have my hand wrapped around my keys in my jacket pocket. Tossing something to someone will almost always illicit a natural response to try and catch it. Or at least start to. Someone presents as a threat, a quick toss in the air of the keys throws them off for a split second. Just enough time for me to draw and acquire a solid sight picture of center mass.

I'm constantly harping at my kids while we're in public as well to be aware of what's around them. They get annoyed sometimes, but I think they'll thank me later. It can be difficult to find a balance of being aware and being a paranoid schizophrenic when in public, so I try not to be too over the top. They'll pick it up on their own eventually.

I try to always locate any exits when I go inot a new building in case of fire or other threats. Ditto on the eye contact and not being buried in my phone while walking! I also use my hearing to kinda map what's going on around me. Sounds that are out of the norm or a sudden change in sounds or the rythem of sounds catch my attention.
I could be wrong...it's happened before and it'll happen again.

+1 on the exits. My lady, who pays no attention to her surroundings, thinks l have ADHD as I'm always checking peeps out.

Another +1 on the exits. That's the first thing I'm looking for when I'm boarding an aircraft, or a train...same thing in movie theatres and in shopping malls. When I'm in urban areas I'm usually on high alert, because of high population densities. I try to imagine a bubble around me, and I'm hyper aware of people within my personal bubble, and the size of the bubble varies depending upon my location.

While in foreign countries I try to blend in. If I'm carrying a backpack, I'll use a Velcro flag patch of whatever country that I'm in on the backpack. I keep silent as much as possible, and observe my surroundings, watching for anything that does not fit. Above all, trust your instincts.

anyone here have a somewhat covert camera I could use for surveillance? my computers are mac which makes it complex. I can run it to a vcr if that's an option. Here's the issue, I have large, obvious cameras I can run to vcr but that won't work. I am getting an personal care aid to do some of the housework they would prefer I not do medically. I am kind of opposed to the idea because I feel like I have to babysit this person what the hell is the point? I dont have a hell of a lot they could steal, the firearms are all out, I do have jewelry but it's in 1 room I could watch where my medication also lives.
I wasn't sure if someone had something that would work hanging around. And I can't just leave the laptop open to do that. I suppose if need be I could hallow out a stuffed animal, a big ****in one to run a camera I have into. Not sure it will get the right view but can try if no one has anything else. I also think it is going to be obvious when my alf doll has cords coming out it's ass.

I don't have any covert cameras, but it is something I have been thinking about lately.

                        Here are some cheap ideas...

This was just a quick google search, so there may be other/cheaper sites.

That is a NICE looking bunch of meat!

I can still find a use for my thumb, even though it no longer has a hole to finger.

I could have been enjoying his nuts.

As the owner of a housecleaning business, I just want to let you in on a couple things that might help you in this situation.

First, a camera is very easy to detect if you have a good cleaner. They will always find it. When I clean, or am training an employee, I teach them the right way to dust and clean things. They need to be picked up, cleaned under and around, and put back in the same position you found them in, and any really good cleaner you hire will do this too.

Second, all you really have to do is drop hints here and there that you have some 'nanny cams' around the home due to the fact that you are just taking extra precautions due to your many firearms and with everything going on with the laws these days blah blah blah. Nanny cams are the better surveillance term to mention that cleaners are more wary of due to the fact that they are really small and can be put anywhere. Just the thought of them will make any cleaner tow the line.

Third, only hire someone you like. First impressions are key. If they feel 'off' to you, that is a no go. Trust your instincts!

Fourth, and this is a biggie, GET REFERENCES! And CHECK THEM! Too often I have given people my references and they never speak to them. I always wonder in those situations what the hell people are thinking?!?! They don't know me from Adam, they don't know if I am trustworthy or just a great actress...

Fifth, you can tell them what rooms you want cleaned and restrict their cleaning to the bathroom, kitchen, and livingroom and have them stay out of your bedroom... I have clients like that...

Hope this helps and good luck!

I tried to like your response Female, but it won't let me. weird. thank you so much for your advice!!
Unfortunately, I don't get any say on who they send. it's from an agency and they are more of a home care assistant than a housecleaner. But, dropping hints about the cameras is a great idea. I don't expect them to do anything but surface clean and laundry, but that being said...should I set up something that is totally obvious then? Even if it isn't hooked up let them think it is? I don't have anything obvious of value. My tv is an old tube style, I don't have china or fine silver, the majority of my jewelry is costume but I would be pissed as **** if any of it left. And equally as upset with my meds. The idea of unearthing my life to hide everything to accommodate that idea seems crazy to me. My place is really only 3 rooms.
I am really on the fence about this whole thing, whether it causes more issues for me than it fixes to have someone come in. i'm a control freak, so maybe it's just easier to do it all myself.

If your going to hint that you have something then don't set up an obvious one, If you do they will probably see its not hooked up or assume thats all you have.

If they can't see a camera (since there isn't one) then they are likely to assume they are being watched everywhere.
