I am not going to discuss the reasons to or not to decide to clear your house other then to point out that you basically have 2 defenses to shooting someone in your home that I am aware of. You have Self Defense and Defense of Property.
Here is the part about using deadly force to terminate burglary.

Anyways back to topic at hand. These are my personal thoughts on home clearing and I will also be showing a video that I feel may help explain what I am talking about. This is really a complex topic so I am going to keep it pretty general so if you have something to add or questions to ask please do!
I am going to start this out with a video that will explain a lot of the basics off the bat.
ETA :Here is another great video
After watching that video you should have a decent understanding of what "pieing a door or corner" is when I talk about.
In the video you saw that he had a flashlight mounted onto his Pistol. When it comes to home clearing or night firing there is a lot of debate on best lighting methods. Lets face it you need some type of flashlight because you have to be able to accurately identify your target before shooting.
You basically have two options. Either use a weapon mounted light or a hand held flashlight. Some feel that a handheld light is the better option since then you don't have to potentially point your firearm at a loved one to see its them with the light like you would with a weapon mounted light. Another benefit to a hand held light is that you can actually hold the pistol in one hand and the light in the other above and away from your head. Why is that a benefit? Well if your home intruder is also armed where are they most likely to fire? Exactly at your flashlight since that is all they will be able to see (assuming dark conditions).
Now a benefit of a weapon mounted light is that it is always on the pistol. You don't have to worry about it not being there and the batteries should be better since your not likely to be using it for around the house type chores. You are also able to activate and deactivate the light while maintaining two hands on the firearm which should ensure more accurate rounds on target.
Now in the video when he explained pieing, you can use that for both doors, hallways, and walls leading into open areas. Like he said its important not to be to close to the wall so that someone can not reach out and grab your firearm. Another tip is if you for whatever reason peak your head around the corner and see and intruder and pull back and decide to engage then you will be better off coming out from behind the wall or door or whatever low. They will be expecting you to come out at same height they saw you at before so by changing your height drastically you can get an advantage.
Obviously if you think you might ever clear your home or other structure you should practice. I would suggest getting a gas blow back Pistol . Here are some in general on amazon HERE . Ideally you want to find one that mimics whatever you have. The reason why I suggest getting one of those is so that you can actually practice clearing your home and even set up targets. When no one is home you can set up targets around your house or even have a friend or family member place them so you can practice not only search them out but also engaging them. Just make sure you don't shoot anything on accident that could break.
Another option to make your life easier is to get IP cameras like the ones HERE. By having IP camera set up looking down hallways or in open areas you can look and see if anyone is there in safety. It can also give you a huge tactical advantage if you need to get to a loved one or to aid police when they get there.
Again this is not a real specific description only because you could write a book on this subject but its a nice little primer and hopefully can get some discussion going.
