  • What do you use for water purification?

I thought it would be interesting to see what everyone here uses for their preps as far as water purification?

I actually went with the go big go home philosophy and got this http://www.safh2ouv.com/Survivor-SAF...-Purifier.html . If your interested I believe I can get you a better price.

Here is a video of a rebranded but same water filter.

The water starts out by going through a 1 micron sediment pre filter then it passes through a 0.5 carbon filter and finally goes through a UV light chamber killing off any viruses. They are good about accommodating special requests. For example instead of plan Alligator clamps at end they put in an anderson connector as well. That way I can power it through andersons or alligator clips.

I have used it a few times already and have noticed that it won't get the staining out of Adirondack water it does take out all the junk and makes the water actually taste good. Jackalope actually saw it in use on the Camping trip this last year when I used it to fill up mine and Lord Timelords water containers.

Granted it is heavy but but its output is far more then anything else and for a group especially is well worth the weight.

Another interesting feature that you can use it for (or to think about if you build your own) is to back feed your house. So lets say you have a boil warning or the municipal water is no longer safe to drink and you have a creek or lake or pond on your property. You can actually connect it to your outside faucet to fill your pipes that way with safe water. To be honest not sure if the pump is capable of doing more then say a Ranch because of having to pump water that much higher then itself. The pump is a on demand pump though so if you turned on faucet or flushed toilet it would turn on to refill system. Also note if your municipal water is no good you probably need to do a water bleach mix to run through them first to disinfect.

So what do you all have?

I have a little bit of everything around for home and away use. The stuff I tend to have the most of is bleach, tincture of iodine, and potassium per manganese for chemical treatments. I stock these not only for water purification, but also for other uses. The bleach is good for cleaning and sanitizing surfaces as well as everyday laundry. The iodine is primarily for first aid, but can disinfect water as well. The potassium permanganate can disinfect water or wounds, but also makes for a good fire starter.
For a kit when I'm not at home, I have both chlorine and iodine tablets, as well as a few straw style filters, but my preferred method on the trail has always been boiling.
I've been meaning to pick up a larger ceramic filter for the larger capacity it offers and it's portability.
I've also thought about getting a berkey setup for home.
Politicians are like diapers. They both need to be changed often, and for the same reason.

Yea those Berkey's seem really good. Check out this video I found a while ago about a guy testing his.

I have a variety of filters, Katahdin pocket filters in my BOBs, a Berkey knock off using 5 gallon pails for at home. I have a well with good water, so water isn't a big concern at home. I also have an inexpensive soldier system I bought off Ebay that is decent.
I've seen USMCveteran's system and it is impressive. It's pretty fast and it's probably best used with a large water source for a group. I noticed that the same company has some lesser priced units with lower outputs which would be fine for a family.

Water water everywhere and lots of it to drink. At home I have a LIFE ionizer because I like alkali water. For BOB or on the trail I have a Life Straw and 2 liter Sawyer filtration setup. I haven't even opened the Life Straw. That's for SHTF and I need to be slurping from puddles. Also have some tabs and droplets but won't use those unless I have no choice.

How many of you have also actually used what you have to filter water? I had a katadyn water bottle filter and did not like it at all and thought it was a pain to use quickly in water with leaves and debris.

I use my Sawyer. It's quick and easy. Affordable also.

                  I use this:

Beer is like porn, you can buy it but it's more fun to make your own

I have to bend over too far

                  I get a boner.

bareback every couple of days, GTG. Bareback, brokeback, same $hit!

I joined a support group to help me deal with my social anxiety but I just can't seem to work up the nerve to go to a meeting......

I currently have the following ways to purify my water:

Water Filtering Purification Bag (smaller bag inside my BoB):

                    1. Two Aquamira Frontier Emergency Drinking Straws. Each is good for 20 Gallons of Water.
                    2. Lifestraw. Good for 1,000 Liters of Water.
                    3. Katadyn Water Purification Tablets.
                    4. Sawyer Mini Water Filter (not in picture, as it's a more recent addition to my BoB). Good for up to 100,000 Gallons of Filtered Water! It's also backwards flushable to keep debris out.
                    5. Hennessy Hammock Hex Rainfly Water Collection Funnels. They screw onto standard water/soda bottle threads and hook onto the corners of the Hex Rainfly to capture rain water for filtering. They have a small screen to keep larger debris out of the bottles. Using these funnels on my Rain Fly fills up my empty water bottles (if it rains), and I simply screw on the Sawyer Mini right onto the bottle to filter it for clean drinking water!

So far the only filter of these that I have actually used is the Lifestraw. I used it to drink straight out of a local creek that flows water all year long. I sucked down about 24 Ounces of water three days in a row to see if I would get sick. No ill effects were observed. It doesn't remove bad tastes from the water like a dedicated filter with a carbon element, but I'll take wierd tasting water that'll keep me alive over nothing at all!

Lord Timelord, Is that tarp set up specific to the Hennessy or will it work with any tarp? Cool idea if your camping where you don't have water sources and pack water is at a minimum.

I have a Katadyn hiker I've owned for 20 years, lie straw, iodine tabs, the little glass bottles with the iodine crystals, providone iodine, bleach. Lots of options. I've tried them all.
