  • GPS watches

Been doing a lot of hiking with scouts and thinking about picking up a GPS watch. Would like one that gives GPS coordinates, altitude, and miles hiked at minimum. Been looking at Suunto Peak 3 which has a lot of other cool features: Barometric pressure tracking w/storm warning, Sunrise/Sunset tracking with remaining daylight hours left, and some other cool features. Made in Finland. Battery life among the best for this type of watch. It's really big and ugly though, LOL. Would only use during hiking/camping trips.

Garmin makes some with nice features as well such as Fenix 3

There are a few other companies that make them, Casio, Tom Tom, etc.

Anybody have any experience with these and/or recommendations?

Thats really cool, I think your minimum requirements could even be handled by a smart phone but then battery comes into play.

Am I short stroking or going to fast?

Suunto Traverse model has some cool features for hunting/fishing.

      TOOLS FOR FISHING AND HUNTING

Location based moon phase calendar with moonrise and moonset times helps you determine the best fishing times, while the barometric pressure graph allows you to closely follow weather changes.

Automatic shot detection keeps track of the number and location of shots. When scouting, use hunting specific POI types to mark trails and important locations. Sunrise and sunset alerts help plan your day, while the customizable red backlight does not interfere with night vision.

Not sure but believe these are true GPS receivers whereas smartphone relies on connectivity through a cell tower. These do interface with smart phone through Bluetooth for maps, etc.

I use the Garmin Fenix 2 for my running/biking/swimming and hiking.
The Fenix 5 is really nice but expensive.
High Peaks Guru, but prefers twin peaks

we will need a separate class for my wife and for my girlfriend.

I have hiked extensivly in the Adirondack and Catskill mountains. I would not like to use my GPS watch to navigate in the woods. I would prefer to have a hand held GPS with loadable maps.

I use a Fenix 2 as well. I've been really happy with it.

Cgrutt, if you go Garmin, check out their factory outlet store. You can get factory refurbs for a lot less than new and they're just as good, if not better. http://g.factoryoutletstore.com/

Additionally, check out https://www.dcrainmaker.com/ for GPS watch reviews and comparisons. He focuses on the rub/bike/swim capabilities, but it never hurts to know what they're capable of.

Didn't realize that the were fitness trackers for rubbing.

I’m sure there’s an app for that somewhere.
