  • Good write up on Elecraft KX3

Damn you USMC, now I've got my eyes on one of these...

    Good write up here:

Thinking about buying as a kit with the ATU and 2m optional board, what else would I need? And just for clarification, this is only a 10w unit but I can add an amp in future, right?

    Thanks!

I'll write more tonight so don't buy just yet lol. I have talked to Colorado, Florida, even Slovakia without additional amp lol.

Oh and all of those have been with wire antennas.

I would skip 2M module because your baeofeng operates on 2 meters and 440. I would get antenna tuner like you said and the roofing filters.

Besides those you need a microphone and a power supply to run it on. Then I would also get a BNC dual binding post to make easy wire antenna.

Yes you can add amp in future, I want to get that amp they sell as well lol.

My ham club runs weekly nets on 2m and 80m so figured that would be best opportunity to learn how to use it. As I understand it, a lot of local (all over country) repeaters operate on 2m so it would make sense having it if I were bringing radio on hiking/backpacking trips. The handheld receives 2m pretty good but hitting repeater is hit or miss with it, at least from my house. I ordered a couple of new antennas to try out with it though and that may resolve issue. Also would be able to bring both on trips etc. and be able to communicate within party (assuming everybody is licensed).

2 meter and 440 ect are all local communications that really have to use repeaters . Once you go really to 20 meters on up is where you really start to talk long distance without repeaters.

You can add 2 meter option later too and used that money towards an antenna or making your own.

You can get free software to run kx3 from a computer as well. That way you can type messages to get sent via ccw
