Wrote about this before but now it's official, as part of my "Woodbadge" goals, I want to put together a PDF for Scouts focused on primitive vs modern day survival skills. The main idea is mankind has been surviving for tens of thousands of years without the benefit of "modern-day" materials, equipment and methods and I'd like to document various fundamental survival skills that will hopefully be beneficial to Scouts. The goal has a diversity element to it as well, so I want to cover various customs, traditions, superstitions and beliefs of various primitive cultures as it relates to survival and compare and contrast that to modern-day approaches. I want to focus on both Native American and Australian aboriginal (i.e., "Bushcraft") cultures but the door is wide open for inclusion of any others (e.g., African, South/Central American, Asian, Norse, Cave-man, whatever...) so long as it pertains to core survival skills that can be used by modern day Scouts. Figured this might be a good way to generate some content on site as well. Topics are wide open and I'd appreciate your contributions. Basics themes to include Cultural differences, Shelters, Knife & tool making, Fire making, Water, Cordage and containers, Hunting & trapping, wild and natural foods/medicines and Navigation. Open to other ideas and suggestions as well.
I'll set up a new forum section if there is enough interest. I might do it anyway and just post stuff as I go along. Have about 15 months or so to complete project, but would prefer to get it done within next 6 months.
Thanks in advance!
