I don't know for sure but I believe local club meets every third Friday of month and I'm assuming hosts exam before meeting. No meeting in December though due to their annual holiday party. So next meeting third Friday in January. I'll get info. Exam only cost $15. Joining club and ARRL was $49 (which is cost of ARRL alone, but ARRL pays club dues if you join both at same time). Have your wife take exam too. I'll try to get mine to take it but don't think she has a head for this kind of stuff. Tech is really easy just need to memorize a bunch of stuff. General was a bit more involved but still very doable (as you can see, lol).

Nice try me bucko. Ain't no way my wife would have the slightest interest, nor the head for this either. I'm not real concerned about the studying. I'm guessing I can cram it in for 24-48 hrs. After that I couldn't promise I'd remember anything. But the exam should be behind me at that time lol

Got a very cool little Baofeng VHF/UHF Transceiver this morning, thanks USMC! Now have to figure out what to do with it, LOL

Here are main things to get you started.... Download CHIRP , it's free program to program radios.... Then go here and look up repeaters in your area for 2 meters and 440 http://www.nyrepeaters.com . It's been a while since I programmed mine but you will see where it says offset then a plus or minus . That means a positive or negative offset .

That should be enough to get you started or in the right ball park.

If mek got his license then you could probably (if you have the codes) use a local repeater near you and link it via internet to a repeater here and talk. I've heard one here linked with Alaska before
