The Big Picture

I couldn't think of another place to post this so here it goes.

I had a thought about an awesome way we as a forum could give back to the community. In the same spirit of CG's many generous karmas in the past what if we decided to donate time and/or money to some philanthropies outside the firearms community. An example might be a group of us go help at a homeless shelter or animal shelter. Or perhaps (if NYS has this program) do adopt-a-highway. It would help dispel the stereotype that firearms owners are crazy bunker dwelling, super sized bullet clip owning loonies. We could all go wearing some NYSG shirts representing the forum as a whole.

I think something like this would come back ten fold in a positive way for the forum and us as individuals. Plus, it would be free advertising with a lot of good will attached. This may have been brought up in the past but just an idea I had.

Any thoughts?

I like that and think its a great idea! I found this link for the Adopt-A-HIghway progam https://www.dot.ny.gov/programs/adopt-highway . I think the main hurdle will be to see who lives where and is willing to do what.

I definitely think its something to consider though and see how much interest there is.

The adopt-a-highway might take some planning. When I did it for the college radio station I worked at many years ago we would go once a semester and clean up the trash. We always had a good time and made many a jokes from the crap people would throw on the side of the road. We found everything from underwear to video tapes and of course the usual smattering of various beer cans. Afterwards we would take a group picture by the sign and then some of us would go to lunch together.

As for the local volunteering it could be something as simple as three or four of us (in Dutchess for example) go to a shelter or something for a few hours. Maybe take a couple of photos and have some fun while there.

Ok, so I've been thinking about this some more, lol! Another way to help would be to leverage the power of those of you that have local businesses. I'll use Buell's deli as an example.

He could set up a bin or two inside the place with a poster that says something along the lines of, "we have partnered with NYShenaniguns.com to help feed and clothe local families in need. If you are able please bring a few canned goods or unused clothes by the deli to donate."

This wouldn't have to be a seasonal thing either. It could be year round and once a month he gathers up the donations and takes them to the local food bank etc. Then, during certain times of the year (Thanksgiving for example) he could offer a discount to customers that donate. That would of course be his choice. He could also keep a running tally of how much in either food, clothes or money donated and have a sign for that. Something like, "As of November 9th, 2014 we have raised ___ for local families in need."

Make them come to you as it were. Plus, I bet he would sell some more sandwiches as well.

Also, with this idea it would make this forum look rather large as we have members from all over the state.

Again, just throwing some thoughts out there.
