I thought I would take the time to give a brief rundown on how it works from what i can tell.
You can start chats 2 different ways. First if your in a topic and want to chat with someone there is a dialogue box next to their name. Clicking on that will start a chat.
Second way is by sending a regular PM. This was you can send it to multiple people. I think currently you can send it to up to 5 people at once but I can change that if needed. Once you started PMing people if you click messages button at top it drops down some of your recent PM's. If you click on one of them it opens it up in chat mode. If you open it up from message center it opens in PM mode.
Chat mode opens in new window which can be convenient if your on computer surfing different places. Chat is basically a PM that autorefreshes and shows incoming messages real time.
One con is that if you have email notifications turned on you will get those for the chat messages.
It doesn't tell you when someone is actively typing either.
