  • Narrowing in on new name

So what do you guys think about www.gunownersite.com?

  • #2
My experience says a site name should be short, descriptive of what the site is about and easy to remember.

But then I am an old gas, so maybe my metrics are different than you young uns.

Are you removing all association with NY? There are plenty of nationwide gun owner forums, why compete with the well established?

Just trying to keep name generic and keep options open. I think we will continue to have NY concentration and can handle that through tags and how we layout site. Also want to keep it open to things of interest to gunowners in general. Don't envision competing with other forums on national level and don't think name suggests that.

LHT I agree but problem is most of the short easy to remember domains are already taken or cost a small fortune.

Main thing is we are trying to get away from current name which can be viewed unfavorably with gun ownership. That was never the intent but I understand people's reluctance to even see what we're about and have been told that by a lot of people over past year. As much as I like the name it has to go if we even have a shot at growing.

Dang. I just tried a few random URLs that popped into my head and they're all taken. Not an easy task.

I can still find a use for my thumb, even though it no longer has a hole to finger.

              C,
gunownersite is not the best choice analyzing this pragmatically.

I think I mentioned this before.
just a few rules about brand intelligence on the web....

              - Think about a branding strategy. With that vision a set of names will follow.
-When using composite names from generic words avoid more than 2 names.
-contractions are ok as soon as they do not lead to easy misspells.
-Avoid the prefixes my, the, i-, e-, all, etc... they are commonly use by domain re-sellers to sell more name variants and they subtract value from the name.
-Avoid ending with words like place, group, site, forum, etc... .. they are redundant and also reduce value.
-Avoid general exclusions and inclusions by name. ...unless there is a good reason for it.
-Use names that cannot be easily misspelled. Short names are preferred for this reason.
-Avoid articles and pronouns anywhere, adjectives are ok.
-Make sure that some obviuos variants can be registered including some misspelling.
-In general avoid fancy and funny names and stick to the brand with some seriousness. There are exceptions to this, but not many.
-Make sure the names are available in social media and lock them up. The compounding value of the brand name in social media is more
important than the TLD name. (Top Level Domain)
Without social media brand and strategy a name and a brand are not going far these days.

              I hope this helps.

There are many good names to be invented. A name is just a name.

Make sure the name is locked in social media first because w/o this, even if it is available as a TLD, including some obviuos misspellings, it is pretty much worthless.
Still might have some IP value overtime but in terms of actual strategy is not so valuable.

I know you were thinking of dropping the NY, but nygunclub.com is available. Not a bad name imo.

Please read the directives I posted. I have managed thousands of domains for brand intelligence.
Dont be obsesed with one word like guns. There are many better ways to convey an idea wo using the name for the object. For example if I say locknloaded people might picture de same as if I said activeshootersforum. Also think about parts that describe an object or idea. If I say firing pin that is the same as firearms.
Use the imagination and the thesaurus! Lol

Like if you say AdamsRifle.com you have several things going.
                          Easy to spell
Starts with A so it goes on top on alphabetically sorted lists.
You can quote John Adams on the brand sonnot only conveys firearms but also rights. Adams said the 2nd amendment is more impotant than the constitution itself. This in line with cgruts vision for a patriots forum but w/o pushing into corners one way or another.
                          Think outside the box.

What is the source of this comment? I have not seen this anywhere, and would like to know the exact phrasing.

The closest thing I can find with a quick search is an unattributed quote of "Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. They are the American people's liberty teeth and keystone under independence."

LibertysTeeth would be an awesome gun forum name but it is already taken.
