No of course you got to aim..aim any firearm..BUT..if there's a "bump in the night/heat of the moment" break in, and it's pitch black and nowhere near a light switch..I'd sure as hell be happier with a shotgun that you can pretty much point and fire with 00 and you should be able to buy some time..much different then a pistol in that same kinda scenario where you need to "place" that shot more directly and precisely..that's what I was meaning in my prior post.
I share your sentiment of the 12 Gauge Shotgun as the ultimate home defense tool.
The "point and fire" theory I don't necessarily agree with though. The same care needs to be taken whether using a shotgun or a pistol, the shotgun just has the massive power advantage. #00 can easily miss a target from close range. Even if you get 4 on target you still have 4 or 5 loose .30 cal projectiles. That may be acceptable in your specific living quarters (neighbor proximity, other residents in the home, etc.) but it's not for most people. On top of that, you mentioned that a slug is first up in your tube, so the point and fire theory completely implodes with that if your first shot is a point and fire to buy time.
I have the shotgun under my bed but I also have my gun inside my night stand. I would use both so if you run out of shells stiill have agun with a couple of mags. Faster than tying to reload a tube.
It is a shame when people demanding tolerance, have no tolerance
