No pistol... stick with shottie for HD?

So I moved recently. From the densely packed city to a much more rural area. Bottom 1/2 of my house is brick. Back in the city, shottie was my first choice. Now the closest house is about 300 yards away and uphill, errant rounds are likely in the ground before they get anywhere else.

I dont, and won't have my pistol permit. Would you ever consider moving to something else as a HD gun in a rural area? If so, why? Nothing that falls outside of nysafe is to be considered, but I do have an sks.

Thoughts?

I would use a shotgun with the slowest heaviest amount of shot to save your hearing. Or go with a lever action rifle in a pistol caliber.

I live out in the country,a mile to the closest house. I have a full featured SKS, my lever action, a ruger 10/22, but my go to HD gun is my shotty with reddot and tac light. After the prison break I kept it under the bed with buckshot in the tube. I love my SKS and shoot it daily, but the shotgun is lighter and you don't have to be as accurate under pressure.

I'd stick with the shotgun. Sounds like you have no more worries about taking out the neighbor. If I were you I'd go with the LE slug/00 buck combo shells.

00 buck in the Mossberg is my stand-by HD loadout as well.

You can always buy another shotgun if you have a semi then buy a pump or vice versa you can never go wrong with more guns especially since pistol grips and muzzle brakes are not on the baned features list for semi auto shotguns

Shottie is my goto HD gun. Take MDTS tactical shotgun class if you can. Won't be disappointed.

Thanks guys. Likely to stick with the shottie. I use #1 buck. Slightly smaller pellet size enables more lead downrange, so we'll stick with that for now.

ETA- CG - I took a defensive shotgun course from a local company called Iron Sight last summer. Highly recommend them. Writeup somewhere over at the other joint.

Heard it before but not sure I agree with you. Sure if you're dealing with an organized force and if then, well good luck. Pistol should be adequate for your run of the mill crack head or punk a$$ gang banger. Like to see some statistics on this. BTW, I have a number of pistols and long guns but goto HD will be the Benneli M4

12 gauge, 5 in tube..a planned mix of Slug,00,00,Slug,00..reason being, slug should do it and if not then the next one is a mighty powerful tight spray of 00..and so on if need..
