  • MDTS practical shotgun skill 1 Review

I was fortunate enough to make to cut at the last minute to take this class taught by Chris Fry.

The purpose of this course is really to familiarize someone with operating a shotgun. This was good for me since in the last 10 years I have shot a shotgun twice before today (shot them a bit in Marines prior).

The class starts out with going over pros and cons of shotguns, different types of accessories, types of shells, types of shotguns and a lot more.

When we actually got hands on we started with dummy rounds and dry fired while going over and practicing the different types of reloading the firearm. Chris is one of those instructors that shows you different options and let's you choose what your most comfortable with.

There was a lot of live firing and two squads so you didn't have to wait long to shoot some more. In fact after doing what felt like a million emergency reloads during a drill where you tried to keep your shotgun full at a increasing rate of fire on target it was nice to get a break!

The drill "rolling thunder" was a crowd favorite where someone was shooting at targets all the time. First person shot first target then so did next person and so on. The first person shot first two targets then next person and so on until your shooting at all the targets in a row and depending on your capacity you might have to reload will engaging the targets.

You also get the opportunity to pattern your shotgun with the buckshot you bring.

For some of you who don't like the recoil of a shotgun it's addressed well by Chris. No on had a sore shoulder at the end of class after firing 200 to 300 shells.

Definitely a good class as evident by a bunch of people who have taken it multiple times!

One other thing of note was that someone's shotgun literally fell apart lol! No one was hurt and it was handled professionally and they were able to get it back together. I missed the initial excitement but looked over in time to see the barrel fall to the ground.

Had to have that fancy Italian hardware, didn't ya? LOL! That M4 was certainly a nice boomstick, I'd certainly like one if my budget would allow it.

Another top notch class from Chris, worth every penny and more.

We made a lot of noise yesterday, sorry about the neighbors luck. HAHA!.

Short video of the final drill of the day using #00 buck at home defense ranges to see how each persons load patterned in their gun. The Federal Flight Control ABSOLUTELY rules. It put all the rest to shame.

Some of you may notice some NY Shenaniguns schwag in this vid.

DWA, Ham Chu and myself that I know of. The guy and girl on left were the ones who had their shotgun fall apart. They also had squib scare.

What's squib scare? I know what squibs are for Hollywood film special effects. Or is what you're talking about different ?
