  • Recoil Anticipation

Since I've now got off my lazy butt to fill out my PP stuff and thinking how nice it will be to shoot a pistol more than once a year when I go home to visit my folks I remembered the last time I shot a pistol (Christmas of 2014). My little brother pointed out that I was anticipating the recoil on my own damn pistol that I had shot many times before and on a regular basis when we lived elsewhere. He pointed out that the first few rounds were well placed on target but as i kept going *eek...14 round magazine* my rounds kept getting lower and lower on target even though I initially started aiming at the same spot. He tried a cool exercise with me to prove it. I handed him the gun and would turn my back to him. He would rack the slide but not tell me if he put a round in the chamber. Then I would aim and pull the trigger. Sure enough I caught myself pushing down as I pulled the trigger. First few times the chamber was empty but after I appeared to relax a bit he loaded a live round and I fired. Then another. I thought it was getting better but once I went back to regular shooting it started happening again.

Anyone on here know of some kind of exercise I can do besides actually shooting to remedy this? I'm glad he spotted it and worked with me a bi to try and correct it!!
I could be wrong...it's happened before and it'll happen again.

Balance coin on front sight post and dryfire. This will work on trigger control and as a by product help somewhat on anticipation.

Also I used to bring snap caps to range and randomly load them into magazines so I didn't know when they would be in chamber.

For without a pistol you need to simulate your grip by balling up one hand and wrapping other around it. Now put it out in front of you and have someone hit your hands back towards you to simulate recoil. Randomly they should miss your hands and if your anticipating then you will see your hands dip.

Recoil should be welcome like a good and vigorous Tahi massage.
Don't worry too much and keep practicing that after 1M rounds you will be a master.

It is a shame when people demanding tolerance, have no tolerance

So should I imagine that instead of the bang of the bullet firing I should hear "me love you long time"? LMAO!!

          In all seriousness thanks Mek!

When I go shooting alone, I like to load up 5 or 6 mags with random numbers of rounds. Anywhere between 2 and 10. I also mix in A-Zoom snap caps with the live rounds. Shuffle the mags up on the bench and have at it. You never know when you'll run dry or when you'll have a misfire. When you get a click with no bang, pay attention to what your muzzle did.

I mostly see the recoil anticipation with newer shooters and the 12 gauge pumps. The last shot after they're empty the muzzle has a noticeable down and left trajectory on the click.

I have a Mossy 500 that I've fired tons of rounds with and I don't seem to have that problem with shotguns or rifles. I used to not have it with pistols either. Damn I'm rusty or something

It probably is being rusty, I have zero experience with pistols but when I bought my shotgun and started playing with exotic rounds I was anticpating recoil. When I was active duty I played on the range all the time never anticipated recoil. Went national guard (2008-2010) only played with 5.56 (no recoil) so when I started buying diffreent calibers after the safe act banned my favorite 5.56 I was anticipating too much. Now after tons of rounds through it, the magnum turkey loads and magnum slugs are a good morning kinda round. Between 5 of those and a cup of black rifle cofee in the morning I start the day with a partial chub and no anticipation.

I feel your pain, when I start shooting at the range I get some anticipation also, as I go through some rounds it tends to go away. For me its mostly rifles, probably because I don't practice enough with them. Shotguns and handguns I'm good with.
Are you gonna pull those pistols or whistle Dixie?

I will continue to flash cops
