  • NRA Basic Pistol Instructor course. May 23, 24 and 31, 2015. Yonkers & Cortlandt

Title says most of it. I am running a NRA Basic Pistol Instructor course, two days of lecture, one day (4hrs) on the range.

The class is close to capacity. If there is anyone here interested in gaining this certification, AND within striking distance of where the class and range session are being held - drop me a line.
Link (instructor candidates) to register for the course is here: http://www.nrainstructors.org/Signup...aspx?id=303535
Workshop/lectures are in Yonkers, NY range exercises will be held at Blue Mountain Sportsman Center, Cortlandt NY

In another breath, I am always looking for those who have NY pistol permits, but are not supremely confident in their basic pistol handling skills for our range exercises. At my instructor courses I like to invite those who are not very proficient, where they may benefit from 2hrs of gun safety and shooting fundamentals review. The fee for participants is $40, covers range fee, you bring your gun, your permit, your patience and your ammo. Range exercises for this specific class are on Sunday May 31 at Blue Mountain Sportsman Center. If you would like to participate, or know someone who might be interested, please contact me via the forum.

If you are already a proficient pistol shooter, this is not the course for you to participate in range exercises

      CGrutt,

NRA Basic Pistol instructor candidates are required to be safe, experienced pistol shooters.

The below is my own list of requirements I've created, based on teaching this course over a number of years (taken directly from previously published documents, published by me).
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ï‚· Lawfully able to possess firearms (handguns) within locality of jurisdiction where training is being
      conducted.
 Demonstrate proficiency in English – written and spoken word.
 Basic public speaking skills – i.e. the ability to speak extemporaneously on a topic of interest for a few
minutes while holding the attention of the intended audience.
 Know and understand “safe direction” for gun handling.
 Know and understand the NRA’s three rules for safe gun handling.
ï‚· Know the three basic different handgun types.
ï‚· Understand ammunition components; differentiate between the two basic types of ammunition.
      ï‚· Know the firing sequence.
ï‚· Understand the difference between potential ammunition malfunctions; understand the protocols
      required to address those malfunctions.
ï‚· Know and understand pistol shooting fundamentals.
ï‚· Understands how to ascertain which eye is dominant (if applicable).
ï‚· Knows what a basic range safety briefing is; its purpose, its intended audience, where it should be
      conducted.
      ï‚· Understand basic range commands.
ï‚· Able to shoot, using said fundamentals, from the bench rest, and standing positions.
ï‚· Know how to score a target.
ï‚· Understands what precautions to take prior to cleaning a gun; demonstrate ability to clean a gun.
 Know how to safely field strip a (your) firearm, and how to re‐assemble it.
 Able to complete basic gun handling exercises of the pre‐course assessment (see below).

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here are the specific pre-course assessments from the NRA:
Instructor candidates must be able to, according to guidelines from the NRA Basic Pistol Shooting course:
      - load, and unload pistols of the above three different action types.
      - clear the two following common types of stoppages: 1. Misfire; 2. Stovepipe.

And last, there is a live fire exercise; candidate must be able to shoot from an unsupported two handed position
at nine inch target 45 feet away, a total of twenty rounds, with all rounds consecutively landing on the target
within 6" of each other (20 shots, no misses, 6" group on a 9" plate)

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Speaking broadly here - not specifically to CGrutt, but to anyone who might be interested in being certified as a NRA Basic Pistol Instructor - with me or any other NRA Training Counselor

As one or two others here may state, MOST people are unable to land 20 shots in a 6" group at 45 feet under testing conditions. I see it all the time - folks I shoot casually with who are good shots, once there is a timer (not for this class) or it is an official "test" perform worse than their norm. If you (anyone) are not shooting at this level, but are safe and relatively proficient, I am normally able to get your shooting to this standard within a few minutes (provided shooter is open-minded to learning, and is willing to immediately leave bad habits behind). For full disclosure, if you can't currently consistently hit the 10. 9 and 8 rings on a B-27 (24" x 45") at seven yards, your shooting skills are not at that level where consideration for NRA Basic Pistol Instructor is pragmatic. That roughly translated to hitting a 8x11 sheet of paper at 21 feet.

So nothing is lost in the walls of text I've posted above...

I am looking for a few shooters who have done the Basic Pistol Shooting course, but are not confident in these BASIC pistol handling skills.

        Examples of ideal candidates:
        - did not complete any range exercises prior to gaining permit
        - not comfortable with the operation and use of their handgun
        - limited knowledge on how to use your handgun

On the day that range exercises are conducted for the above mentioned Pistol Instructor candidates, we also run a session for basic pistol shooters, where our instructor candidates work with basic shooters under our watchful eyes. Slots are limited for participating shooters as we maintain a 1:1 shooter:instructor ratio (does not include 1:3 shooter to range officer ratio). Shooters pay $40.
