Ok, some things I've been thinking about for a while and I can't think of a better place to ask questions than NYSG!
1. Firearms training for self defense. I can operate most firearms for basic target practice. Sight picture etc. One thing I would like to learn is training for self defense, either in public or at my house. What little I have seen (thanks to some DVD the NRA sent me years ago) is you want to know your house and where the tactical advantage is in every room. Also, from a different source is if you use deadly force in your home or in public what are the chances of being convicted by a jury in a place that is not gun friendly. My question is what courses and/or material would you guys and gals recommend? I don't have my pistol permit as of yet (although I plan to) so I know some pistol training is out.
2. What would you all recommend for hand to hand defense training? I have heard some people say "just kick'em in the nuts or punch'em in the throat" but what type of training would you suggest to neutralize a threat in public or private as quickly as possible without the use of deadly force? Many moons ago I did do a little bit of MMA training with a few people but that was so long ago I can only remember a few things and sometimes I wonder how useful is that in a real situation.
These questions may seem kinda odd or "green" for some of you and honestly a few years ago I didn't think much of it but as of late it's been bugging me more often. I don't venture into the city that much but the thought always crosses my mind on what to do if someone or multiple people try to assault my wife or myself. The city aside there is always the chance of an encounter in the "quiet burbs".
I'm just not sure where to start with anything? What type of training, cost involved etc. I've always been a firm believer in good fundamentals first as that's served me well in my profession. I'm not a huge guy as those of you who have met me can attest to. So, what do you all think?
Oh, one thing I have been trying really hard on for the past couple of years is my situation awareness. I always try to locate the exits in any new building I enter and I try to scan any room I'm in looking at people, their mannerisms, body language and demeanor. It's amazing how much you can pick up about a person from how they act rather than what they say.
