  • Standing, unsupported

So does anybody want to talk about shooting?

Let's here your tips for tightening groups while shooting rifle standing unsupported (no sling, elbow away from torso).

Ahhh...off-hand (awful hand) shooting, the bane of CMP shooters everywhere. I think warfab posted up some links at one point, I'll have to search.
Beer is like porn, you can buy it but it's more fun to make your own

I have to bend over too far

    I get a boner.

bareback every couple of days, GTG. Bareback, brokeback, same $hit!

I joined a support group to help me deal with my social anxiety but I just can't seem to work up the nerve to go to a meeting......

BTW, shot my best off hand course ever at last months CMP match with the M1, first time I ever got all 10 on paper. Dropped 14 for an 86 with 2 X's. Not bad for standing unsupported at 200 yards, iron sights, 9.5lb rifle, pushing 150gn .30-06 rounds:

Yes, unsupported. High power CMP offhand does not allow support/sling

Yeah. Just no sling or artificial means of support. I use the "elbow on belly" support method (requires consuming plenty of beer over the years to properly build out the belly support "shelf")

I'm terribly inconsistent standing. Just when I think I'm getting better at it I shoot a couple goose eggs. I've had a few occasions where it just seems easy, and I have no idea why. There have been a couple matches where I shoulder the rifle and settle into position and I'm right on target and it seems effortless. Most of the time it just sucks. My best offhand score ever was a 97 at a GCL club match. I recounted my score like 5 times because I couldn't believe it. My average standing score is probably closer to 80.

I haven't shot offhand very much or very often. I was practicing yesterday for upcoming course I will be taking and found I was doing better if I didn't think about it too much. Longer I tried to steady myself on target the more unsteady I seemed to become. I was shooting free arm because that is what I thought we will be required to do at class, but reached out to instructor and he said either free arm or arm rest is acceptable. Guess I'll be practicing more arm rest, lol. I spent quite a bit of time yesterday at range and for first time in my life was really in tune with my front sight. Rear sight and target seemed to be off focus and the front sight was sharply in focus. I mean like HD sharp, lol. Never experienced that feeling before.

Front sight focus is the key. More to the point, sharp focus on the very top edge of the front sight. Sounds like you've finally experienced that....don't worry about the focus on target or rear sight. "See the fuzz, shoot the fuzz". Also, I always score better when I quickly and smoothly get on target and break the shot....you've only got a few precious seconds to get a good sight picture and squeeze off a shot before the wobble zone kicks in.

You said it better than I did. Yes, top of front sight was in super sharp focus and target was fuzzy in background. Definitely felt better getting shot off quickly. It was sort of a surreal feeling.
