    So what are chokes all about?

    Already started a couple shotgun threads and so far you guys are helping out a lot for this shotgun noob!

    So what's the deal with shotgun chokes (best Jerry Seinfield impersonation) ?

    I believe they are used for determining spread of buckshot or bird shot. How does one determine which one to use per application? Do they come with the shotgun or do you have to buy them separately? Can you shoot slugs with a choke installed? Where do you put the choke?

    If it's not pretty clear I know nothing on this lol so please feel free to include extra info that you think I might find useful or helpful!

                Ok so assuming you screw them in barrel. So is it also safe to assume you can't shoot a slug with one in?

                  There are specific chokes that are rifled for shooting slugs.

                    You can shoot slugs through a choke. From my Mossberg owner's manual:

                    Extra-Full choke tubes are not recommended for use with buckshot or slugs.

                    The “Improved Cylinder” choke tube will usually produce the best accuracy with most slugs.
