  • Mossberg 500A Question

I've had a Mossy 500 since 97 I bought used. It's been a great shotgun over the years! Had tons of shells fired through it. Has an 18.5 Slugster barrel. When I shot it frequently I would clean it regularly but it started jamming regularly even if cleaned and I would have to push the empty she'll out with a cleaning rod.

    What could be causing this?

I've only fired WinChester target loads out of it since most places I've been don't allow slugs.

I read somewhere that the ejector may be worn out. Could this be correct and if so how easy/hard would that be to replace? Could the shells I've used be an issue as well?

Lastly, I would like to eventually like to get another barrel to maybe try some skeet shooting. How much does a barrel usually go for?

Some of these questions have been somewhat answered in other threads here but with different shottys so I thought I'd ask.
I could be wrong...it's happened before and it'll happen again.

I'll be keeping that site around. I've often thought of disassembling it and giving it a good cleaning but I've been hesitant about getting it back together properly.

I don't own one but it does sound like an ejector problem since its not ejecting. Any idea on how many shells are through it?
www.AvidArms.com I'm STIHL out of conditioner!!

I have no idea other than enough to probably fill a full sized truck and that is since I've owned it. Before that who knows. I'm quite fond of it since it was the first firearm I ever purchased and owned so I want to keep it working.

This video works really well for me when I tear mine down for cleaning, very detailed on the reassembly steps. It really isn't difficult:

One thing that has always amazed me about firearms in general is how many small, moving parts have to move at exactly the right time in order to send a bullet down range and in a fraction of a second. Especially semi autos.

Start with a full take-down and cleaning. Remove the extractors from the bolt and look for damage. Could just be gummed up.

Gunsick beat me to it. Here's a video on breakdown. Didn't watch the whole thing but there are a ton of videos on the 500. I'd start with a complete breakdown and good cleaning. Good luck.

Thanks guys! I'll give it a try soon. Also, these are a few types of videos I thought would be cool to make CG.

My first thought is an ejector issue, either gummed up or worn.
Old enough to know better, still too young to care

If it is the ejector is it relatively inexpensive and easy to replace?

About $10 if you don't need to replace any associated parts (retaining pin/springs, etc.)

Should be dirt cheap for both, it has 2. You can find whole bolts for $20.00 used on eBay.

Yep, could be real dirty. Do just like gunsick suggested. I need to do that for my pops on his mossy 500. The extractor isnt yanking out all the shells, so its either really gummed up, or worn/broken extractor.

check ebay for a mossy 500 28" barrel.. perhaps around $100
