  • Shotgun issue..

So today at the range i shot off 9 shots from my H & R 12ga 18in. Attempting to rack the 10th and everything was locked up..couldn't slide the forearm couldn't push the slide release and the shell was there ready to go but wouldn't cause the slide release wouldnt't depress..so i come home and break it down and still having issues trying to break down because the release trigger half in half outish..finally I get it apart and realize what the issue(or part of the issue was), a spent shell stuck up behind the one i was trying to rack. In this pic you'll see it stuck in the base of the magazine tube..i needed to poke it out from the topside with pretty good force. i clean it every single time I shoot it but it did seem so tight jamed..any thoughts? Its just plain ole 2 3/4 #7 winchester gander mtn special. In cleaning it this time i oiled my finger and rubbed it up and around where the shell was wondering if that would ease the movement of the future ones if that happens again. But 9 went fine?? Confused and a tad worried. Thx all.

I see one in the barrel .... where is the one stuck in the mag?? This is also a common occurrence in the Remington 870's as of late. I've had to disassemble no less than 4 different 870's at the range that were brand new and the owners never got 4 rds out of them. Is H&R in with Remington somehow?? The base was stuck in the chamber on the 870s' and 2 of them actually ripped the base from the hull. I'm not sure what is causing this issue. I wish I could be of some help.

It could be the shell not properly sized. Shells are crimped between the plastic and metal part and sometimes the machine might produce inconsistent or even smashed
heads in extreme cases. Measure the shell heads first and see if they are properly sized or try a different batch / brand.

It is a shame when people demanding tolerance, have no tolerance

CS. Yea the one that you see was the jammed spent shell. All is good and fine now after I did the breakdown and clean. As for everything else you wrote is spot on. The H & R I have is basically the 870 and all intergangeable except the barrell, but mine is all H & R. Aaaand the range breakdown for your several Shotties is exactly what i was about to do, cause we got this Peshitta down to a science, bust it out in a few..but time was tight and I always save the shotgun for end of the day

Sucka, I thought I explained it pretty damn good! Gloves are for the stench upon reek when you got a pot roast roasting, juggling things and things are timed..ain't got time for that! LOL.

Had a few of those cheap WInchester loads stick in the chamber on my SPX, out of spec or whatever...not sure but the rim is so cheap that the extractor just tears a notch out of it and you gotta punch it out from the muzzle end with a wooden dowel. Not a common occurrence but 2 or 3 per flat was enough for me. I switched to shooting Remington, Federal, or RIO target loads...end of problem. YMMV.
