Allowing Optics in the CMP Black Rifle Matches

That's what it should be though..... If any branch issues certain items to main force it should be allowed..... But not just anything that lets say special forces can use becuase thats anything.

Not to derail thread but are cmp matches held in NYS? How do they get around mag restrictions and features issues, say with someone new to sport that only can purchase modified AR say with permanent mag.

I know they are held in NYS and shot one the other month but not sure about AR rules.

These matches are held in New York State. CMP shoots allow a number of different rifles depending on the specific rules of the club running the shoot. M1 Garand, M1A, 1903/03A3, M1 Carbine, AR15, and a number of foreign military rifles can be used. The SAFE act isn't even a factor for some of the rifles. The AR15 competitors have adapted their rifles in different ways depending on the rules of the club and the comfort level and disposition of the competitors. The majority of the shots in a CMP course of fire are single round load. For rapid fire strings range officers usually adapt the time limit to accommodate the different New York compliant rifle reload modifications. Magazines must be the dimension of a 20 round mag or larger, so some people have modified their 20 round magazines and some have purchased factory limited 20 round sized magazines. The most you need to load in a magazine at one time for competition is 8 rounds, so the 10 round limit isn't a factor.

Do you ever need to drop a mag and reload while engaged in course of fire?

Garand 10 round rapid fire starts with2 rounds loaded...bang bang ping, and then load a full 8 round clip and empty that.......in 70 seconds. Yee haw! I think the AR guys do the same. The fun part is when you're shooting1903 or foreign military bolt action: 5 rounds and then a stripper clip reload of the remaining 5 shots....all in 70 seconds.

Can you reload a K31 with stripper clips? Only historical military rifle I own. Kicks like a mule though not sure I'd want to shoot it in a competition setting lol....

K31 is the rifle I compete with! Shoots rings around the Garand. There are strippers available but they're hard to find and rather pricy. I have two K31's so I just do a mag change with the second mag. Sadly, spare mags for K31 are very rare and easily run $150 or more when you can find them. FWIW, I shot my Mosin sniper at a recent match, you cannot use stripper clips with the sniper: I did manage to get 5 shots off, load5 more by hand, and get them all off in under 70 seconds (and I'm a lefty!). Should be possible with the Swiss girl since the straight pull is easier to cycle than the mosin bolt.

Hey CG, most clubs that host CMP matches have a few loaner Garands. It's worth asking if you're really interested in shooting a match. Wish you were closer, I'd hook you up with one of mine and you could shoot a match with me, Warfab, Liberty's Teeth, and Hamchu.
