  • Rimfire Sniper Match-Springwater 03 MAY

Not really a service rifle topic, but it is a competition..... I posted the details in the Rimfire Forum, but we just tested the moving target yesterday. AWESOME is not the word. Range to steel is ~125yds, with three of us shooting, one spotting and one sadist controlling the movement of the steel target. Video link below.

This match was a great success!

We had 2 firing orders, of 10 and 8 resp. The shooters engaged 10 stationary (10pts for 1st round hit, 5pts for 2nd) and had 5 attempts at the moving target (10pts per hit) for a match total of 150 points.

Reactive steel targets were laid out in a semi-circle, with the first 5 stationaries (88, 118, 124, 134 & 163 yards-in order) on the left, the moving target at 118yds in center, and then the last 5 stationary (180, 132, 151, 96 & 70 yards) on the right.

Shooters (10) were laid out nearly shoulder-to-shoulder prone (spacing them further away would impact both the shooters view to the targets and the spotters ability to call corrections).

The target was announced (each marked with a large placard labelled A-L), along with the range to that target. The shooter was identified and given some time to get ready. When the shooter signaled 'ready' (raising his foot) the order to fire was given. We had two observers on the target as they were engaged. If they missed, they immediately re-engaged.

When each shooter had their turn engaging the 1st target, we announced the next target and its range...and repeated. We advanced the firing order each sequence so the poor lane #1 shooter wasn't always first (Lane #2 shot first for target #2, lane 3 for #3 etc...).

Every shooter had their range dope (Thank you!) or at least close enough.
Scores ranged from 75 up to 110 points, with no one cleaning the course. The ranges to the targets were announced to the shooters as they were engaged, and range personnel provided the spotting and corrections in mils, if possible. Of the 18 we had one female and one junior shooter. The female tied for 3rd place, 10 points behind the leader.

A good time was had by all.

HIGHLY recommend the SWFA Super Sniper. It is MADE for this, awesome glass, 30mm tube, adj obj, and great turrets. recommend 10X, but comes in other magnifications also.

Better than the Bushnell Elite 3200 10X, which I also have. The lack of adj obj makes it a bit tricky, esp up-close (blurry at 50yds...useless at 25). But it can get you in cheaper.

Whatever you get, turrets are absolute, and mil-dot reticle is/will be necessary. We will be moving to a classification where shooters will determine their own range to target...and the cool kids won't need a laser. We can show you how to use it, if needed. We were planning on holding a class, but ran a second firing order instead.

That SWFA is sweet, justifying it for a $135 rifle is kinda tough though.......especially when I just bolted some TechSites to her for the Appleseed match later this summer.

Are you going to be at the M1 clinic June 6th in Williamson?

Naw...we are gone that weekend..which is also the 3 gun in Ontario, according to my calendar...

Mine is a 10/22...cost about the same when I got it..but the new trigger, pipe, stock, etc... just called for better glass than Tasco could make. Oh, a bipod will be a great benefit and look for a back bag...or take a sock into the backyard and fill it with sand.... mine:

I like the sock-filled-with-sand method. Am I going to see you this Saturday at GCL?
