  • Whats the point of Service Rifle Competition?

I guess I am trying to learn more about the sport. Why was it founded? Does it serve a purpose outside of competing? Who or what is governing body? Is this the same as CMP? What makes this sport unique and why should others go out and give it a try?

    Thanks in advance!

GUNSICK's link covers the history and nuts and bolts of the CMP. There is service rifle competition outside the CMP (NRA sponsored), but the CMP governs the majority of the service rifle competition in the US. The rich history of service rifle competition dates back over 100 years and that's part of what makes it cool. The CMP also supports service pistol, small bore rifle, and small bore pistol competitions, so you can't really say the CMP is service rifle competition.

Aside from the fact that shooting competitions are fun in general, service rifle competition is the most popular form of centerfire rifle competition in the US and has the most participants. The number of participants and the level of competition is part of what makes service rifle so much fun. It helps that the rifles used are common and readily available. Plus, there are well established goals and rankings. The Distinguished shooter badge is awarded by the US government to civilian shooters and military shooters alike. To me it's also cool that you compete alongside the best military marksmen at national level competitions.

To top it all off, I just think it's pretty sweet to compete at 200, 300, and 600 yards with iron sights. Far too many shooters never find out what they're really capable of doing with a rifle. I'm surprised how many shooters I talk to who think 200 yards with iron sights is a long shot. Service rifle competition will push you to be a better shooter and probably do things you didn't think you could.

We've got a bunch of photos on the team Facebook page that might help you get an idea what it's like: https://www.facebook.com/BlackCoyoteSRT

The CMP also has a bunch of online photo albums. These are photos from the national matches last year: http://cmp1.zenfolio.com/f721748896

Another point is learning to shoot a 90 gr 223 pill from a 20 inch barrel at 1000 yards and holding 2 MOA. I never would have considered had I not had the opportunity through competition!

              And after a match.....real cold PBR's!!!!!

I guess I should have just cut to the chase: most guys get into service rifle competition because of all the adoring female fans who throw themselves at anyone walking around Camp Perry with an AR.

Talk to my son as I know nothing!!!!
It is funny how all the BCSRT team guys hang out each night drinking my real cold PBR's and never helping to clean up my rifles or the mountain of beer cans. Then my kid shows up with some honey, kicks me out for a couple of hours, they all oh and ah, then run back to their rooms to do what ever it is old guys do!!!
                      I remember being young!
