  • Shooting steel anyone?

Last week I went down to a friends farm and was shooting some steel targets at 1,180 yards using my 7mm-08 and 308.
It was fun but I was alone and had to walk from 400 yards to the 1100 line because I could not get there by vehicle. This on top of the 1.5hrs.
    drive each way.
I like to be with people and try other disciplines and more targets. It is more fun.

I was reading a blog from one of our friends and I am why don't we have more challenges like this one?....

I don't care if we do a "long range" 22LR match at 300 yards but why don't we get organized and get out there
to test the true marksmanship skills more often?

.22 is prolly more do-able here
there used to be 300 and 600 yard lanes at the Groveland Conservation League, but they "disappeared" long ago
the Facility is still there, but gates are locked, and nobody been home since 2004

Sounds interesting. Long range shooting is a discipline I'd like to get in to.
Ok I can go a couple ways

I think it is like many others but the nice thing is that you get an instant report when you hit.
The idea is to have the targets setup in all sort of directions at undetermined distances and exposed to all possible elements not just
distance but different geography and atmospheric conditions.

I find the 22LR out to 250 yards to be lots of fun. lots of drift to play with at different distances. I put that to the test in the summer
house when I get the birds eating the fruit from the fruit trees in the furthest part of the property that can be up to 250 to 260 yards
and because it is ad the edge of town I cannot use anything larger than a powerful airgun or a 22LR.

Quality match 22LR ammo makes a good killer even for foxes. CCI minimags are also very consistent in the budget ones.

Remington value packs should be avoided as they are all over the place. That garbage is for plinkin only.

when watching threads why they go away after one day or two? Why they do not stay for a week even if nobody posts anything?
It is not like there are dozens of them being created every day. I think this might help a bit more with continuity when
going to the main option of threads being watched.
            What do you think?
            just a thought.

I am currently running a Rimfire Sniper competition at my LGC....we use 22LR and reduced-sized steel targets out to 200 yards...unknown distances. It is a lot of fun. First shot hit = 10 pts, 2nd shot = 5. No more attempts after that. Ten targets for 100 points total.

A buddy figured out that the ballistics of a 22LR and a .308 are pretty close, at 1/4 scale. So, the drop of your 22 at 200 yards is somewhere about what your .308 requires at 800y.

He made up some 1/4 scale steel targets of E and F silhouettes, and we drop them all over the range. We lase them, and provide the shooter with the range if they request....but we are hoping to drop that and resort to mil-dot only....someday.

Target turrets are popular, but some guys are doing straight up hold-over across the whole course.

The dope on my 22 for Fed 40gr copper plated 1240fps:
              50y -3moa
              75y -1
              100 +2.5
              125 +6.0
              150 +9.0
              175 +13.0

This varies GREATLY across ammunition brands, and its hard to get a enough of a single lot, that shoots well enough to keep a minimum 2MOA. I have seen the 175y drop vary from +10.0 up to +15.0 depending on brand.

Pretty good. Yes the corrections involved up to 200 yards are pretty similar to the M80 at 750-800 yards.
                What ammunition are you using?
Also I think anything 1050 and below will help if it is high quality so we avoid going through the transsonic range that also happens pretty fast.

                thoughts?

I try not to worry too much on the velocity of the ammo as I buy it, but how accurate it proves to be....then figure out the dope thru actual range time. I haven't really found a ballistic calculator for rimfire....nor the B/Cs of rimfire bullets to plot. I have not experienced too much accuracy drop off out to the range limit of almost 200yds, as the velocity drops.

I like using the Winchester 40gr LRN at 1280fps (the ammo is so varied, I stopped using names and just go by bullet weight/.type and velocity),and the Wolf Match Extra (this stuff has a bad rap at my club, but I find it quite suitable. Its just finding enough of what I want on the shelves w/o having to go through the whole process again with a new load.

I am using a Ruger 10/22 (which is now old enough to drink legally), Green Mtn .920" barrel, Timney trigger and Hogue overmolded stock. I have a 10x SWFA SS scope (not the side adjustable focus one), which I love.

BTW the next such match is on 22 OCT down in Springwater (just north of Dansville) at 9:30, if interested.

The estimated BC of the CCI 40gr minimag is a G1=.138 at the avg velocity. It doesn't adjust much over 200 yards.
It might be a bit different depending on the actual speed and twist but not so much to be worried about for this use.
You will find that if you zero at 100 this equates to 5.6 mils at 200. Some mil reticles let you hold that value w/o adjusting the scope.
The tricky part is the wind that can give you that at 200 yards like for example a a 10mph sustained wind will give you 4.5 mils.
