Crossfire? What you talkin 'bout Willis

We are anxious to get out to the "Big Range" and get the event started. My arrogant spawn has challenged me to a big money match that will be the aggregate of the William Perry/Presidents Hundred/ National Trophy Individual. If we are tied up we will run a shoot off in the Hearst Doubles match. We will see who pockets the money!

Ham_Chu look forward to seeing and your team out there. If you can make it over lets get into town one night and tear up the Bait House.

errr... is that some new standing rapid-fire position? Something you learned in SAFS, perhaps.

Just when you're completely frustrated and nothing seems to be going right, you catch a steady wind on your last stage of fire before heading home. Suddenly the whole trip seems worthwhile and you're looking forward to coming back next year.

So the memories of Camp Perry are starting to fade. I didn't shoot well but had quite a bit of fun this year so I thought I'd share a story about my experience.

I think I've been to Camp Perry 7 times now. Every time I go I have to search around for a radio station that I like for the last stretch of the drive there and while I'm driving around in the area. I can never seem to really settle on a station that does it for me, so it usually ends up being an annoying non-stop search for a decent song. The one evening as I was driving to Subway for dinner after a match, I stumbled across a station that was playing some old school Metallica. I was convinced that I'd finally found a station I could settle on, so I just left my radio on that station for the rest of my time there.

For anyone who doesn't know me, I can assure you that I am NOT a morning person. This makes Camp Perry an interesting vacation for me because shooters are required to be on the firing line by 6am. Not being a morning person, it usually takes me a little while to become fully conscious after the alarm goes off. I try to eat some sort of a breakfast while I am working on becoming fully conscious. Then I have to shave, put in my contacts, get dressed, put on sunscreen, and get my gear loaded into the truck. Then there is the drive onto the base, finding parking, assembling my 'shooting cart', and then loading all of my gear onto it. Then, I may or may not be at the range in time to catch a shooter's shuttle out to the firing line. So basically I end up setting my alarm for 4:30am and moving as fast as I can move in the morning to get out there on time. I was only there for three days of shooting this year. By the third day it seems a little harder to get moving in the morning. Plus, on the third morning I need to clear everything I have out of the motel room and turn in my room key before I head to the base.

So the third day is the big points match that counts the most. It's the morning of my third long day of baking in the sun and straining my neck on pit duty. Naturally I'm running a bit behind and trying to get to the base as quickly as possible. I drop my room key off in the dropbox at the front office and jump in my truck to head to base. I'm stressed and worried I'm going to be the last to get to my firing position. Without thinking much about it, I turn on the radio to the same station I had heard the Metallica on. There are a couple guys talking. It's some kind of morning show that is kind of funny so I leave it on and don't change the channel. Suddenly a song comes on. The intro is slow and it sounds like..... a barber shop quartet?? What the heck? This was the station that was just playing Harvester of Sorrows the night before. I didn't feel like channel surfing so I just kept listening.

                  The song:

By the time I parked my truck at the range I was laughing to myself and smiling. Apparently I picked the right station to improve my mood that morning.
