  • NRA High Power Championships Moving?

It looks like the NRA is planning on moving their High Power Rifle Championships from Camp Perry, Ohio to Camp Atterbury Indiana.

    https://www.ssusa.org/articles/2016/11/16/nra-moving-national-high-power-rifle-championships-from-camp-perry/

“The NRA High Power Rifle Committee met and determined it would be beneficial to all competitors if we moved the Championship from Camp Perry to another site. After much discussion, the range at Camp Atterbury, IN, was selected as the new home of the NRA National High Power Rifle Championships.”

The proposed match schedule (subject to change) is below:

-First Shot Ceremony - July 7
-Welcome BBQ (afternoon) - July 7
-Across the Course - July 8-13
    -Mid-Range - July 14-17
    -Long-Range - July 18-22

Willing added, “I intend to change the face of High Power Rifle as a discipline, and will be presenting matches that are better than competitors have ever seen before.”

Yup. Either get a scope on your CMP rifle, or prepare to drive another 5 hours to Atterbury.

FYI: I have met several individuals who mobilized thru Camp Atterbury on their way to Iraq (mostly 98th Div from Roch). They all said they were all glad to finally get in-country, and leave that God-forsaken Nat'l Guard post behind.

Did u also get the CMP email about the NEW AND IMPROVED match events for 2017? It looks like CMP will try to fill up that week with their own 'NRA-like' events, to include the XTC stuff

Ham_Chu, Johnson's press release states the new matches will be 2018 as time is short for 2017 prep. I spoke to my gal pal at CMP HQ today and she said there are some pretty pissed people. However this forced their hand to develop their on qual/cert program to classify long range and pistol for the first time and they are excited as they get the most participation for CMP nationally and regionally. On the down side we loose our favorite pit boss as she and the rest are NRA supplied. Hopefully they train up some new talent so that the matches run smooth. Now it will be interesting to see where Dick Head Demill sees his alegence!!!!

I checked out google earth and can't seem to find anything that looks like a 1000 yard range at Camp Atterbury. The only obvious ranges that are visible are the trap and skeet ranges along with a shorter distance range covered with rows of deflectors. There might be a range with pop-up targets, but it doesn't look very big at all. Am I missing something?

Anyone got a good scoop on exactly why the NRA is making this move? Is this where they shot the small bore matches last year?

to be honest, I think it will be a good thing, in the long run. Shame NRA can't get their heads out of the ethereal clouds. I think they will lose on this deal. All CMP needs to do is duplicate the NRA matches, and run them the way CMP always has.

They will need to train up the volunteers for this. I am just pondering, though.....will AMU go to Atterbury, if that is not "The National Matches?" Will AMU be able to do both? Wherever AMU goes, they shall be declared 'the winner.'

I had heard that smallbore was somewhere in Indiana, I think its safe to assume. I had also read that NRA claims the daily usage fee for Perry is twice ($16k to $7k per day)what Atterbury is asking. Totally different National Guards, totally different demands. OHNG will be losing also (and Port Clinton), until CMP steps up and fills the vacuum. These matches make up around 60% of the OHNG annual training budget, from the looks of it to me.

Maybe if NRA had higher enrollment, they could cover the cost. Also not impressed with how the NRA's M1A match was conducted, even with a buddy winning a rifle raffle that he just got three weeks ago. (I do not believe that this is a financial decision)

OK, but what does this REALLY mean...

the NRA High Power...that means the XTC courses that everyone talks about....

Mid Range..the 600 yd only match. Never met anyone that admitting to shooting that.

Long Range...the 1000 yd match. heard people talk it about it, but not enuf to fill a thimble.

Whistler Boy match....now not only does the name frighten me, the trophy is worse. Thank goodness they don't let you take it home.

Palma..listed under NRA week. This is a biggie. Lotsa ppl play this one, and its specialized enuf to demand thousands of ducats (see also: dabloon, coin, scratch) in gear. But it was their match that was causing the consternation in the 1st place, so I guess they want out. If they stick around to shoot CMP garands, they do it to get out of the house for haha's. They are serious shooters playing a serious game.

M1A match: oh well. if it weren't for the raffles, no one would go. Purely a 300 yard infomercial for Springfield.

Does that include P100 and NTI (those are CMP events, right? they are listed under CMP week.) This is where the AMU will go, maintaining the legitimacy of the Nat'l Matches. The only sad part will be any crossover shooters, that do both palma and P100. But I guess they can make the drive, as its their full time job (and get mileage!).

So, who really cares if they go?

CMP will fill the week with other events that might tempt us to stay longer, or drop them and that week from the calendar. I am sure OHNG will be pleased with that announcement, as I have no idea how they get their training done with that place occupied all summer long.

So the CMP is pitting scopes against iron sights, and the NRA is moving their championships an extra 3 hours away. Lovely. I still haven't heard a good explanation why.

30CalGal is saying the NRA is going to start their own "distinguished" points system. It sure sounds like the CMP and NRA decided to start competing with each other instead of working together for the benefit of the sport. Maybe someone will provide details and explanations that convince me otherwise.

                      http://www.30calgal.com/nra-national...00-plus-years/

We love CMP for the ability to get 10 points toward Distinguished Medals and The President’s 100. NRA now will have an NRA Distinguished Badge for ATC, mid range, long range and F-Class. The point system will be somewhat similar. Details to come on that.
I was worried this epic move would have been difficult to vote on or that our meeting would have erupted in to fist fights. Quite the contrary. First of all I would like to brag that we have a diverse and strong high power committee. I am honored to be part of it. I realize we can’t make everyone happy. We have to work within the means the NRA allows us. We have to work within the means of our budget which is less and less every year. I personally am excited for this new beginning. We had so many great ideas for the future of these matches.
I think I might have discovered one of the problems. According to a google the NRA is making more money now than it ever has, but high power has less and less money each year? I'd be curious to see where they are spending all their money because I'm of the opinion that promoting high power is a great way to support gun rights. The AR-15 is the rifle of choice for most competitors, so the more people you have competing with one, the less likely those people are to vote for politicians that want to ban them.

Warfab, practical and 3-gun are taking all the glory and precision paper poking is taking a beating for it.

Speaking as someone who shoots all 3, high power long range just can't compare to practical and 3gun for action and excitement. I like all kinds of shooting but a lot of kids these days just don't have the patience for precision shooting.
