If you were going to buy one of these, would the ability to fit the rifle into a small backpack have any appeal for you? Or does it just create a weak point in the gun? Not necessarily structural weakness, but just one more thing that can go wrong. (I've struck out so far on getting a new gun for myself, but with my son showing interest in shooting, a 10/22 might be a 'go' with Dad.)

I have gotten my brother both a 10/22 and 10/22 take down and he likes both (takedown is Christmas gift) . can't go wrong with either IMO. For just range 10/22 standard is fine but takedown could be better for camping trips and what not.
Hope that kind of helps you.www.AvidArms.com I'm STIHL out of conditioner!!
Finally joined the ranks of broke homeowner
Am I short stroking or going to fast?

He's eight. A year younger than yours? He's got my Norwegian genes, though. He already reaches my collarbone, has feet the size of Kentucky, and ape arms. Poor kid! He can almost shoot my 7mm-08, but it's a little heavy for him and the pull is still just a bit longer than is comfortable for him.

I'd still consider a bolt to start out with. We've got to get these boys together sometime along with the rest of the familyTold my wife that you signed up. That went over well, lol. At first she thought you were the "one with the boobs"... I said, what are you talking about? This is S.... from the rally. I think she likes you too because everything was good after that, ha, ha....

10/22s are solid all around however as far as reliability, I've heard the takedown has had its fair share of issues. A beginner bolt action 22 like C said is a good choice too but ya can't beat a standard 10/22. Palmetto State Armory has them on sale right now $179.99... Awesome price.

I don't think you can go wrong with either. I would love one of those new wood stocked take downs. I have built a few 10/22's of my own that were super accurate for around the $600 range. Nothing you would give to an 8yo though.
Have you considered a Marlin 60? They are one of my favorite semi 22's and tube fed so your son can have an evil 15 rounds. Marlin sells a stainless model with laminate wood stock for $210 I believe. I have that model with a DIP rail and primary arms red dot. Its an awesome setup. It's also a short package and no mags to buy or lose. They can't stop us let them try. For heavy metal we will die!!!
Snowflakes are great!!! You can roll them around into a giant mass and shove a carrot in their ........

I've got a take-down model, and my only regret is not buying the stainless steel version. I've upgraded it with a bunch of Kidd parts, new recoil buffer, extended charging handle, extended mag release, etc. The only problem with 10/22's is that you can spend as much as the original purchase price in upgrades or modifications. I've had the marlin 60, and it was an alright gun too, but not as much fun as the 10/22.
