  • Would you drill and tap this???

I have this really nice marlin 39. It's a late 1930's serial and one of the 1st years able to handle modern high speed ammo. I enjoy shooting it but it could be more practical to me. I'm considering having it drilled and tapped to add a small piece of rail to mount a mini red dot. Would you be able to do that to this rifle?

They can't stop us let them try. For heavy metal we will die!!!

Snowflakes are great!!! You can roll them around into a giant mass and shove a carrot in their ........

Leave that poor old girl alone!!

Don't you know you to never "drill" or "tap" anything that's over 70 years old!

Oh God for a moment I thought you circumvented the NSFW section (but you knew that, didn't you?)... Nice gun BTW. I would leave it be.

Just imagine that with picatiny rails and magpul stock and ...... NOP.

But if you absolutely have to do it look for something very small and vintage that will give you even better function than a red dot.
Also vintage mounts. Something that belongs at the time the firearm was made not a modern red dot.
Look in the gun shows and online for vintage scopes some very good quality and found inexpensively.
Even an early tasco or leupold will be much better than a rail and mil dot.
If you need the functionality it doesn't mean you have to cosmetically destroy the firearm.

It is a shame when people demanding tolerance, have no tolerance

I guess I'll just leave it alone. Maybe a tang mounted peep sight. It's already factory drilled for that.

You know what Ric, I have to disagree with the popular vote. As I got older I realized that all the guns sitting in the closet that couldn't be used due to the fact that they were not set up for practical use would never be used. Case in point, my grandfather's 1950 Marlin 336 RC Waffle top 30-30.

That gun is awesome, but with the black on black open sights you (well, me or my dad) couldn't hit the side of a barn. So, I took it to a gunsmith in South Glens Falls...guy named Neil Green.
Excellent craftsman, I would recommend him.

He drilled and tapped for a scope with see through rings, and added fiber optic sights. We have been shooting this gun more over this last summer than in the last 20 years. Got the LeverRevolution scope with a ton of LeveRevolution ammo.

That's a really nice 336 mike. I really gotta get one. I've wanted one for awhile but just haven't gotten around to it.

As for my marlin 39. I would really like to drill and tap it but in the end idk if I could. It's like a $1200ish rifle the way it sits. If I modded it then it would be worthless. I may consider selling it though as I want a m1 carbine really bad and just replace it with a 50's-70's moden 39 that's still quality and already drilled from the factory.
