  • Neck Sizing Ball

    Calling on Meke, are you out there?

    Precision reloading and the sizing ball;
    When I size my match brass I get significant resistance (my opinion) from the sizing ball on retraction, even with plenty of KY. Would I be better off running two cycles of brass sizing first with sizing ball, then remove ball and do a second size into the neck bushing?

    hi. I am here. I am on the road again.;in chicago right now.
    What caliber?
    It is hard to determine via pm. Does it feel like it is catching in the ball somehow or simply extra tension? I would measure the neck walls to meke sure they are within tolerances (not too thick) and uniform. You can also try polishing the ball with lapping compound. Initially the leas you work up the brass the better. Also see if annealing is needed.
    What dies are you ussing?

      Hey Meke, I'm in Minneapolis. Just got out of Mannys!
      It's on my 308 and '06 match dies of Redding manufacture. My brass is LC and Lupua and the ball drags on both. I've polished the balls with red JB's. Do you think I should cut them with gray? I'm satisfied with the OD that the bushing are setting but the drag over the balls concerns me for set back but it's not changing the OD.
      Or should I have a dram or two before processing brass and not worry about it?

        You can try motor mica.It is a white powder that is used to lube case necks.I have found that it is slicker than case lube and reduces drag on the case neck when run over the expander ball.Midway sells it.Another added bonus is that also aids in bullet seating due to the reduction of friction.

          Imo it should be fine. I notice the carbide balls from redding seem to drag more because they float but I dont see issues with the final brass. I dont thinkbyou need to worry but if you want to bring them out to gcl I can bring my range press and take a look.
          Heading back tomorrow. Lots of freaking work which is good for business but bad for the hobby.
          Let me know. Have safe travels.
