  • Reloaders Rifle Caliber?

I the next year or so I will be picking up a bolt action rifle of some sort. I was hoping for an AR, but i don't want a goofy stock. Regardless of the rifle, what is a good "reloaders" caliber? expect a lot of people to suggest 223 or 308. But I also can't help but look at the 6 and 7 mm calibers. I like to experiment with different bullet weights and powders, and I don't particularly like my shoulder to get banged up. I would like to be able to handle 20-40 rounds at the range without feeling like crap the next day. My current 7.5x55 swiss rifle does a number on me (174 gr .308 at 2500 fps).

It would be nice for the components to be easily obtained for a reasonable price i.e. nothing exotic. And my maximum shooting range is 200 yards.

.223 meets all your requirements and won't give you a shoulder boo boo.
Beer is like porn, you can buy it but it's more fun to make your own

I have to bend over too far

    I get a boner.

bareback every couple of days, GTG. Bareback, brokeback, same $hit!

I joined a support group to help me deal with my social anxiety but I just can't seem to work up the nerve to go to a meeting......

Don't know if you've already tried this but...

In your Swiss, if you fired lighter bullets at a little slower velocity it would be easier on your shoulder and you might find an improvement in accuracy. You might also try a shooting jacket as well.

The next thing to look at is the weight of the rifle. If recoil bothers you and you are not humping the rifle all over the countryside a heavier rifle will help reduce felt recoil a lot.

To answer your question about a caliber you might consider .243 Win, .257 Roberts, or .25-06. Lighter bullets and lower velocity is the key. It's a simple matter of physics...

Shooting what you do out of the Swiss is a pretty good thumping load. A heavier rifle would make it much more tolerable.

7mm-08, .243 also would fit the bill, you can load 30-06 with 110 grain bullets or even do lead bullets in them to reduce recoil.

Interesting. I am getting into reloading the 7.5x55, but its nearly "exotic", and GP11 when I can get it is very good ammo. I have some rotators cuff issues in my shooting shoulder, but I am not "recoil sensitive". I just like to shoot a lot, I am not a "let the rifle cool down" guy. I have been spying 243 because of the weight range of projectiles. 30-06 is cool because of the same reason. 223 is also desirable, because of the lower recoil, and large availability. I only fear there isn't enough variety with it.

          Very good suggestions everyone!

7mm-08 will do everything the 308w does and a little more. The 308w also does everything the 308w would do. lol.
seriuosly for a bit more versatility on the lighter side the 7mm is ideal for the 308 case donor.
Another good one would be a 358 winchester that you can shoot with some pistol calibers at AR15 speeds.

But I think one that is probably one of the nicest calibers ever w/o being the 223 is the 6x45. This is the 223 simply necked up and
able to use the amazing assortment of bullets. For this you could buy a 223 and have the option to rebarrel easily (like savage) and
shoot both. The 6x45 can shoot amazing bullets from a short action and provide amazing accuracy and very economic and easy
to reload. It won many matches back in the 60s and 70s when match shooters were in tight budgets and before the PPC and BR
            because the kings of BR.
It is a shame when people demanding tolerance, have no tolerance

The 6.5G is another great one for bolt action between AR and bolt. one can use the same bolt of the 7.62x39 and then swap calibers without replacing
the bolt. There is also a very popular wildcat in 6mm derivated from the Grendel for those 6mm enthusiasts.

The 6x45 is just affordable and super accurate. It cannot match the LBC but it has a few tricks up the sleeve like the capability to load center stack
from a VLD magazine. Therefore one could shoot bullets wiht a COAL of 2.5" and 105gr 6mm bullets. This makes it the same trajectory as a 308W shooting
sniper/match ammo. Even a bit better to kill paper out to 1000 yards if one wants to try.
Great coyote round out to 700 yards. Like the 223AI very popular out west in the prairies.

                  30-06.
Very versatile (woodchuck to bear, 110-200gr bullets)
                  Very available (30cal bullets)
Very easy to reload (wider selection of powders than 308)
Very find surplus 30-06 from CMP (used to be) fairly cheap ($0.60/round and awesome brass to boot)
Very not a modern military caliber, so under radar, unlike 5.56
