  • Loading up my first batch of 45

Figured as its bone chilling out today I would load up my first batch of 45. The Hornady seat/taper crimp die was a little tricky to dial in but its there now. Going to load up some 200gr lead SWCs in a bunch of Military 45 brass that a friend gave me. I would be interested in hearing how others load up their 45 loads.

    Load Data:

    Brass: WCC 80 once fired
    Primer: CCI Large Pistol
    Powder: 5.4gr HP-38/Win 231
    Bullet: Hornady 200gr LSWC
    OAL. 1.200

    Brass: misc
    Primer: CCI Large Pistol
    Powder: 3.8gr Hi-Skor 700x
    Bullet: RMR 230gr JRN
    OAL. 1.275

This is a lower power load I use for practice, no sense wasting powder.

I've recently started reloading, too. I've started with some light loads and moved up to a mid-level load that works with my small selection of projectiles.
Here are some of the practice loads I've recently used:

            Brass: Misc stuff I've cleaned
            Primer: CCI Large Pistol
            Powder: 5.2 gr HP38/Win 231
Bullet: 200 gr coated (Black Bullet International)
            OAL. 1.26"

            Powder: 5.2 gr HP38/Win 231
Bullet: 230 gr plated round nose (The Bullet Works)
            OAL. 1.26"

            Powder: 5.2 gr HP38/Win 231
Bullet: 185 gr coated LSWC (Missouri Bullet Company)
OAL. 1.15" (note: I experienced significant jamming with less deeply seated projectiles of this type)

Used to reload a lot - mostly 45 ACP, .45 Colt and .223. Shot bullseye and cowboy action plus training I was going through about 3K-4K of 45 ACP a year minimum. Sold all my stuff before I moved.

Phazer, if you're reloading 45 ACP and glom "range brass" like I did, watch out for brass headstamped something like ARMCO or ARMRESCO. Only brass that ever jammed in my long gone XD Service (). It would go through my Dillon without a hitch, but wouldn't fit in my case gauge at all. Must have been made from paper mache.

Forget my bullseye loads except for the main one - 3.2 gr Bullseye, 200 gr lead SWC, Federal Match brass from Midway, W-W primers, IIRC the OAL was 1.25". I was using 11 or 12 lb recoil springs in my 1911.

My .45 Colt load for CASS (1858 Rems with cylinders and my 1873's) was,........senior moment, a 200 gr flat nose lead, 7.2 gr Unique, Star brass, W-W primers.

I miss reloading - have fun with it, it is really rewarding.
