I can definitely see that. Meke I had some operational issues with the AR I'm thinking of starting another thread on - would love thoughts/suggestions from you and the Avid family. Had a lot of stovepipes (at least 1 per 10 until last 2 mags which went off without a hitch) and several jams/double feeds. Not sure how to diagnose - what type of info on my setup would be helpful to know?- bullet weight
- buffer weight/type
- barrel length and twist rate
- other
. Had to remove base plate to dump out rounds and clear.
Ok I can go a couple ways

You have soft lips hahaha! This is a common problem and it is without a doubt worn feed lips on your mag. Put a new or newer mag in and see if the problem goes away. One more thing is to not make the mistake I have made. Throw the bad mag away or mark it with pint or something to show its bad.

Thanks LT. Mag is virtually brand new. I'll definitely swap it out and try another. Could anything else contribute to this?Ok I can go a couple ways

My first thought was the magazine too. What kind of magazine is it? I've seen an instance where Magpul magazines were creating issues in an AR10 because the lips were too tall/thick. The bolt carrier wasn't moving freely like it should because the mag lips were interfering.
As long as your bolt isn't installed upside down and the carrier can move on and off the gas tube freely, I'm having a hard time believing it's something other than the magazine. Meke might be able to come up with something else.

Thanks Warfab. I'll have to try a few others to see if that's it. I was thinking maybe the wrong size buffer causing too fast/too slow cycling on the stovepipes but I really don't know. Problem with feed lips make sense to me re: the jams but as I said mags are pretty new.Ok I can go a couple ways

Hard to advise wo seeing and more info but I would try the following:
Disassemble the mag.
Run a stone or Emery cloth or some very fine sand paper on lip edges. Nothing huge, just to remove any burrs or shap edges that cut and drag in the mag.
On the front end also round the edges so sligthly.
For a 10 rd mag you can cut 2 or 3 coils from the spring enough so there is tension but not so much.
If you test the tension with your finger before you start this and after you will feel a lot smoother travel.
Also in the barrel extension / receiver contact point right under the feed ramps make sure it is very smooth. Sometimes this requiers a dremmel and stpne and then polish the ramps. Wash everything well after this and clean flush chamber and bore from any dust and abrassives.
Also try other mags before this but this might help now or in the future.Last edited by Meketrefe; 12-10-2015, 03:40 PM.It is a shame when people demanding tolerance, have no tolerance
