  • Dueling AR platform rifle builds : Opinions welcome

Well, hard to tell what the latest tragedy will bring about in the way of feel good legislation, so might as well stock up, eh? Picked up a pair of lowers yesterday, trying to do my part to make the libs heads explode with the huge number of NICS checks from Black Friday and yesterday.

I'm going to do one carbine and one rifle over time as budget allows. This will be a first time for doing a rifle length build, I've only ever done carbines in the past. I'd like to find a decent priced complete upper (with or without BCG and CH) with a 20" barrel to make a longer range shooter rather than the standard red dot equipped carbines, something consistent out to 600 yds or so. Who's got some suggestions for uppers?

Gonna go with a Flat Dark Earth themed build with a stupid ass fixed mag for now (FUAC, by the way). Although I'm leaning towards using a black quad rail with the Magpul FDE ladders as an accent.

I'd like a Magpul PRS stock as pictured, but they're up there in price a bit. I found a similar type from Luthar on Amazon that appears to have the same adjustments for LOP and cheek riser and is considerable cheaper. Anyone ever used one?

Final decision will be a decent piece of glass. What's the recommend magnification out to 600?

Those aren't mine. FUAC would never approve. Using the one on the bottom as a template for a new build.

Anyone have an experience with Anderson complete uppers? They have a few bare bones 20" uppers available that aren't too terribly expensive. I've never used anything from them before.

Haven't heard of them before but the bull barrel looks like a good deal. Curious why they don't publish rifling twist though. Seems to be an important standard left open that I would not have expected from a company in the business of selling rifles... Just an observation in no way meant badly about the company or its products as I have no experience with either...

I noticed that too on the third one. The other 2 are published. I'd definitely call and confirm before ordering. I would assume either 1:7, 1:8. or 1:9. Any of which should be fine for my needs.

Well, functional lower with A2 length stock is complete. I opted for the Luth AR over the Magpul PRS for the time being. It has adjustments for both LOP and the cheek riser, we'll see how it plays out when put through the paces at a distance. May end up having to upgrade, but it'll do for now.

Waiting on an Anderson 20" upper with a 1:7 barrel to arrive at the doorstep sometime this week, and a Palmetto FA BCG is out there somewhere too.

My last 2 dilemma are glass and handguards. Being that this is intended to be a longer range toy (something out to the 500-600 yard range) I'm leaning towards a Leupold AR Mark IV 6-18 at the moment. Is 18x enough to be reliable to that distance?

Handguard will be a free float quad rail. Recommendations? I've been looking a few Midwest industries 12" free floats for around $150 that seem like they'd fit the bill.

Yes, too bad they don't last too long in the real battlefield...
