I picked up a new 5.56 rifle yesterday and now I want to buy a med range scope for it. I would also like the ability to add a red dot above the scope. I have never purchased one before so I am looking for the communities help.

You could get your scope of choice and put the red dot on a 45 degree offset rail. Doing so would give you more choices of scopes and red dot sights.

I like idea of the 45 mount but I wanted to leave the stock flip up irons on for back up.

Pretty sure they have raised mounts for scopes so you can add flip up rear site as well.www.AvidArms.com I'm STIHL out of conditioner!!

My main "goto" rilfes and 3 pistion driven ARs. So good choice there. There are a few tricks to help them be more versatile and reliable but
in terms of reliability they are the way to go and they are in the same department accuracy wise as the DI driven system.
When you mentioned the 1-4 that is the move in the right direction. no need for anything else. Great eye relieve, shoot with both eyes open at
1 power and still have magnification to enjoy longer distances at the range.
In terms of fast adquisition and field of view the ACOG sights are hard to beat. Great for all practical battle uses but they fall a tad short in
order to make the firearm more verstile in the high end magnification. Also considering that one might enjoy engaging some small targets
at longer distances for sport (not defensive oriented)
For that reason I chose 2-7 and 1-6 ranges with huge eye relieve and fast adquisition. Also achieving fast adquisition both eyes open.
But when turned on to higher magnification give more range and capability to identify the target at longer distances and/or smaller targets.
So take a look at the Burris, Weaver tactical and also the new one coming out from Vortex with a higher magnification range.
Otherwise the PST is a solid buy.
It is a shame when people demanding tolerance, have no tolerance

Obviously you'd have to have enough rail space, but in the one photo below the offset rail is mounted between the scope rings.
