While I see the reason a shotgun is great for home defense, I still prefer a handgun. (I know, this doesn't really answer your question.) My reason is that it's more fun (for me) to shoot handguns, my Beretta, in particular. That means I shoot it a lot more, so I'm really comfortable with it and am getting to the point where I don't have to think about the operation - it just happens naturally, kind of an auto-pilot.
