I have a Mini-14 in 5.56/.223 and a Saiga in 7.62x39. Also have a Remington 700 in 30.06 but I won't discuss that since it's really a hunting rifle and that's the purpose that I own it for. I really have a fun time shooting my Mini. Can't exactly put my finger on why but it's just a cool gun to shoot and I like pittering around and adjusting the iron sights (no optics on this bad boy...at least not yet). Like others have said on here the Ruger 10/22 is another great gun but unless you can get ammo for it what's the point. I suppose the same could be said about 5.556/.223 if the ATF gets their way. I only had a chance to shoot the Saiga once before Old Man Winter dumped all this snow on us but I'm itching for the spring thaw so I can take her out for a real spin. She may just be my new favorite based upon my first run through with her.

Not to hijack the thread, but where have you 7.62 shooters been able to get your ammo for a reasonable price? I've been able to get some reasonable priced rounds at my FFL (which really isn't that close to me) and the boxes of Winchester at Gander aren't exactly cheap.

I'd build an ar15 from the bottom up. If that doesn't work, +1 on thughes' sks suggestion.

I love the ruger mini14 580 series rifles (newer minis with new barrels) and until the ARES SCR came out i planned on getting one. The ares is a versatile rifle, and it uses ar magazines.

Walmart. Well under .30/rd. even after tax. I even got a spam can of 7.62 at one fairly local store.

That is a NICE looking bunch of meat!

I can still find a use for my thumb, even though it no longer has a hole to finger.

Walmart typically has it in stock, $5.50/20 rounds.

For those that have an on-line vendor that will ship to them, 1000 round cases usually run $225.

As thughes says, WW is the place. Wally World in one of the towns up here in the 'Hood in the Northern Wood has it at that price, and no "3 box limit", yet.

Gander's prices on many things are outrageous.

I LOVE my SKS, I have had ARs, Leave the fixed mag and you can make it a bullpup, AK wannabe, M4 style adjustable. We are limited to 10 rounds in NY as it is so your not loosing capasity. And ammo is cheap. Easiest I have to clean. Just dont tear apart Russian, if your gonna modify stick to a cheap Norico. Once your good with stripper clips you wont really miss a detachable mag

Alos I have had an AR and a Mini-30, sold them both prior to Safe, I still like the SKS over all others in the safe, and all others I have owned.

Cool video, thanks for posting it. I bought the cheap chinese strippers when I got my SKS, they were a PITA to use....didn't fit in the bolt slot, rounds didn't slide easily, etc. Finally bought some quality surplus ones and that has made all the difference in the world. I even run the SKS for the practical rifle matches I participate in.

Lever action in 30-30 or a handgun caliber .357, 44 or 45 colt. Should do you. They are light enough to stand and shoot all day. They can be used for home defense if you need a back up to your shotgun and they are fun guns to shoot.
