What Would You Recommend?

I own 2 handguns and one shotgun. I don't hunt. If you could only recommend one rifle here in NY, what would it be and why? I suppose it is important to keep availability/price of ammo in mind.

Ruger Mini14, closest thing you can get to a legal non-neutered, battle rifle.

Ruger 10/22 if by chance you can find ammo- the reason being is it is very versatile and lot of ways to personalize it.

Aww man. I had all this info typed up for you and my phone reset. Short version now.
I have a Ruger Mini 14 Ranch rifle 585 series. It will shoot 223 and 556. It's not a tack driver at 100 yards but it will do 4 to 6 inch groups while standing up. I put a small red dot sight in the scout position so I can shoot with both eyes open. It's fast for acquiring multiple targets. It's just a fun going to shoot.
I think it's Celt that has a Ares SCR that has my interest if I ever buy another rifle

I shoot at a range where the shooting house we shoot from is inside but we shoot outside. Not thinking I want to do bench shooting. Probably just stand and shoot. I have my shotgun for HD.

Something that shoots 7.62x39 (cheap as hell ammo), perhaps Saiga or SKS.

I'm a non hunting guy either and may I suggest the ole Marlin 60 (cause it's 14rounds of semi auto fun) or Henry lever action repeaters. Both are very reasonable priced, Henry slightly higher but u get to feel like a cowboy

I'm probably not the right person to respond to this because I haven't bought my 1 got to have ideal rifle yet. I've thought a lot about it though. I think I'm different than most of you guys because I value aesthetics and workmanship probably more than actual utility so for me an ideal rifle would definitely include a figured walnut stock and possibly some inlay or engraving. It would definitely be a bolt and probably chambered in .308. A great modern versital round. Bunch of rifles fit this bill. Always wanted a Weatherby Mark V but if I ever get one it will probably be chambered in a weatherby magnum round lol. You need to figure out what you want the gun for first. Oh, and a 22LR should be added to the list.

If you want to make sure that you have relatively cheap and plentiful ammo available, 5.56 or 7.62x39 is a staple. As stated above, Mini 14, Saiga, SKS. Don't overlook a featureless AR either. They look goofy as all hell with the Thordsen stock, but they're actually fairly comfortable and still fully functional with a detachable mag. Just need to be sure to add an ambidextrous safety.

I love my 10/22, but if you don't have a stash of .22LR at the moment, then there's no point in buying a gun that you can't feed. CGrutt has the idea down pat. Buy a crap load of ammo and then go looking for a rifle to shoot it.

Doc - I have a Saiga in 7.62x39 that I'd be happy to let you try. Got a couple other things rattling around folks have mentioned above that may make good comparisons. I like the Saiga ALOT because 1) it's no safe queen (don't care if it gets beat up) and, 2) it eats any cheap surplus and steelcase ammo you can feed it. Saiga FTW.

Same here your welcome to shoot anything I got but most of my rifles are semi autos or lever guns. In fact don't own any bolt guns yet. Well except for a couple single shots for kids lol....
