  • Making a Tac Driver - Trueing and Rebarreling a Remington 700 - AR mag.

I have an old Remington 700 that I am going to use to get my son a new shorter 223R tactical rifle.
The idea here is to take a budget 700 and use that baseline to build a match level / high end tactical gun but a lot more affordable than some other alternatives.
When I say tac driver I mean a real life consistent tact driver not just an internet tac driver. ..you know the internet.. where everything is possible! lol.

So I am looking at high end results w/o investing an eye. If folks are interested about the progression I will document more details of the project.

These are my requirements so this could be used later by him for competition in tactical matches or LR hunting if he wants.

    A) Keep rifle in the 9lbs max fully loaded.
    B) Match barrel 22" 1.75 or 1.8 twist. Barrel will be threaded with 5/8 for muzzle devices.
    C) Must be able to produce simultanious groups of 1/2MOA or below, consistently. This means repeatable from a cold bore.
    D) Will have MIL-STD-1913 rails for both optical mounts and forward hand-guard for a Harry's bi-pod or accessories.
    E) Will have adjustable ergonomics for comb and LOP.
    F) Will use AR15 magazines with same mag release type control and it will be able to use both standard AR15 mags and AR15 VLD magazines of 2.5 Max
COAL not available with other rifles.

I am expecting at least 1,000 dollar savings or more but w/o compromising on quality and results.

Please post your progress. Building a 700 is on my list of things to do someday.
Politicians are like diapers. They both need to be changed often, and for the same reason.

Initially this could be done with a savage action too and have krieger, lothar walther, Rock, Schneider or some of the other high end barrel makers cut one to one's specs.
But because I have this 700 action that can be put to better use then we can concentrate on this. Either one the Remington or the Savage have endless
choices in terms of stocks, some of the best stocks ever made only available for these models and a few others high end rifles. McMillan or even an
AI chasis are no brainers but then a more modest B&C medalist with full frame of aluminum inside is also a great performer and will save some dollars.

Some folks think these are expensive barrels and look for the $250 budget ones vs a $400-$500 to save $150-$250 or so that is ridiculous.
So when one sees what goes in the making of these barrels can one say they are expensive or perhaps they are actually inexpensive considering what you get?

I don't always understand all the details of the builds you post (ballistics, etc) but I enjoy reading them and learning a bit each time. Please post!
