Advice on a Fudd gun. Seriously

Hit the superbowl board at work for $650 and thinking of buying a bolt gun. Would be willing to kick in a few more bucks but would like to keep it around $700 at the most.

Need input on what to look at and what to stay away from. I know with my budget I am limited and don't expect a competition tack driver. Want a gun to shoot deer with and maybe some larger stuff if I am ever fortunate enough to make it out of this state.

I was thinking. 30-06 with a some optics.
What do you guys and girls think?

A Ruger American comes in under $400 with no optic and no iron sights, and leaves room for a nice piece of glass. I have one in .308 and I like it very much.

I've been intrigued by the Mossberg MVP series. It looks like they might be just beyond your budget though and I have no real reason to prefer the Mossberg over the Ruger.

You could always head to a gun show and see how far you could stretch your money on something lightly used.

I have a Savage Intl. Trophy Hunter in 7mm-08. Pros: relatively inexpensive, great accuracy, love the accu-trigger. Meh: included scope gets the job done, but is nothing to write home about, love the caliber, but ammo is on the expensive side (still trying to finish reloading set up to use .308 brass). Cons: bolt isn't as smooth as I'd like, has just a little bit of wobble.

Hubby has a bolt-action Weatherby in .308. Would have to ask him which specific model. Love it's performance and looks, but by the time he added the scope, sling, etc. etc, he was over $800 on it. Really nice hunting gun, though we didn't get anything this last fall. Gonna have to get mean and tell our neighbors they can't hunt our property until the second day. They showed up with four people. Not cool.

I really liked my BILs MVP but concensous on another thread seems to be Rem 700 or Savage platform. Have no experience with either so can't comment but I trust the opinion of those that opt for the Rem and/or Savage. I don't own a bolt gun yet but have a few I'd like to get. The ones on my short list are more than your budget as well as mine LOL. Good luck with whatever you decide on and congrats on the pool!

Savage 10/11 or Remington 700 in 308 winchester, the most popular rifles and round in the world by a large strech along with the mauser action overseas.
For light loads barnes 130gr tsx, a 3000fps lighting bolt all the way to 180gr buffalo bore to take down grizzlies if you want and can one day.
Both time and battle tested, I mean real war. Nothing new nor too exciting? well maybe, but they are also the most accurate. Endless aftermarket support.
Best value the savage out of the box. From $430 to a preccision carbine for around mid $700.

Looked at the Savage Trophy Hunter and the Ruger American today along with the Mossberg. Wasn't very impressed with the Mossberg, felt cheap and had a lot of play in the bolt when open. Have to still look at the Remington.

Question, 308 or 30-06, guy at the LGS said the 30-06 is our Dads caliber and 308 is todays round, I doubt I will shoot anything as big as a grizzly.

Bought my boy a Marlin model XL7 in 30-06 which will fit in your price range. Another couple that will fit in your price range are, the Savage and Ruger American. If you want to go to a 308 the Mossberg mvp will just fit into your budget. If you want to add a few hundred more you can go with a remington 700.

During the ammo crisis of the last two years 30-06 was available while 308 wasn't. If sandy hook didn't happen the 30-06 might have been on its way out to pasture as far as popular calibers go but I think this last run on ammo and guns has given it new life for the next 50 years or so. The 30-06 can be pushed harder than the 308 can if you hand load it. The choices of bullets range from 110 to 220 grain.

I have bolt guns on the mind lately. CZ keeps coming into my mind. I have no experience with them but being one who does exhaustive research they sure seem to have a good reputation.
And for a Fudd gun I think their wood furniture is rather nice.

.308 any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

I have a Remington 700 in 30.06 that I really like. Killed fair amount of deer and (Gosh, I hate to admit this) probably more woodchucks. Has an old Redfield scope on it but nothing all that fancy. Just my 2 cents. As the posters above have stated the Ruger American is a great rifle and Savage also makes some really good ones too. The problem with deer rifles is that there are almost too many good choices out there.
