  • Type 3 malfunction with a fixed mag AR15

Had an interesting dilemma this morning while shooting with my brother and cousin. The guys on the lane next to us had a jam, and asked if I could help. Ok, no problem. Let's take a peek. Came across an AR with what looked like a double feed. A look in the chamber shows a live round, no dimple in the primer. The tip of the next round is right on the rim of the live chambered round with the bolt pressing against it. I locked the bolt back and attempted to remove the mag. Ah ah ah..... NY legal fixed. Crap. Now what? Can't get the mag out to clear the jam, can't get the bolt forward to open the rifle. Hmmm, chicken or the egg? I didn't go very far considering it wasn't my gun, and I wasn't entirely sure how to proceed with the fixed mag. The last thing that I wanted was for the jammed round to punch the primer on the chambered round and set if off with the bolt out of battery. I pretty much just put it down at that point and backed away. The range we were at asks that anyone with a jam come to the counter for assistance anyway, so I sent the guy out to the counter. Anyone have an suggestions or experience clearing a type 3 jam on a fixed mag?

Welcome to NY UN****ING SAFE ACT.

Thought about that scenario alot actually.

Somebody needs to sue NY over this dumb, pointless law.

If mag is fixed but not permanently fixed I guess you could drop the mag and clear as usual. Might as well be dead if it happened in a real scenario.

If mag is permanently fixed with epoxy, weld or other you could pull floor plate on mag. Still dead.

Bad guys 1 Good guys 0.

    FUAC.

Pull the floor plate. Stupid ****ing law that puts law abiding gun owners in dangerous situations such as that which you described. BullPeshitta.
Beer is like porn, you can buy it but it's more fun to make your own

I have to bend over too far

      I get a boner.

bareback every couple of days, GTG. Bareback, brokeback, same $hit!

I joined a support group to help me deal with my social anxiety but I just can't seem to work up the nerve to go to a meeting......

Pulling the floor plate would probably be the safest route. I may have been able to pry the jammed round out with a knife blade, but being that it wasn't my gun and the range we were at had a no jam clearing policy, I backed away and sent the guy out to get the Range Officer. I'm not sure what they did to clear it, but it left the firing line and didn't come back while before we left.

If someone is dumb enough to make a fine firearm with a permanent Peshitta like that then they probably deserve all the problems that come with it. Other methods of compliance make a lot more sense as they have zero impact on the function of the firearm.
It is a shame when people demanding tolerance, have no tolerance

I had this happen to me with my MR2. I managed to get the rounds clear with a multitool. It was a major pain in the ass.

I'm with Meket, there are better legal options besides fixed mag. There are better yet illegal in NYS options.

I very much agree about the fixed mag. I'd much rather run a hideously dis-figured rifle with a functional mag release.

I have no fixed mag mods in my possession, so I haven't had to deal with any of the issues firsthand. I had a chance to run a friends a few months back with the MR2 installed and I hated it.

I think the terrible ergonomics of the other options ruin the weapons just as much. Perhaps they can clear jams better, but a large benefit of the AR is the ergonomics. Those funny stocks are like using a Carolina boot as a grip and stock.

If only there was a weapon out there with the ARs functionality and ergonomics. And legal.

Assuming one follows the law, you're right I guess.

But my issue with them is the way they FEEL. Not how they look.

I used a Thordsen on a recent build, and it was more comfortable than I though it would be. The only real issue that I had was running the selector lever. Added an ambi safety and it improved it greatly.

I certainly prefer the standard configuration, hands down. But I won't give up the detachable mag without kicking and screaming.
