  • Buell's First Bolt action Project: Savage 6.8 SPC II

This thread will be used to discuss, disclose, and ask for assistance / opinions on parts, steps, etc.

My goal is to build a lightweight, possibly Scout-style bolt action in 6.8 SPC II chambered short action.

So far I have purchased a barrel, bolt and magazines (308) for the build. I am on the fence about gettin a complete donor rifle to tear down or to build all the way up.

In full disclosure, I have never built or taken apart a bolt action. I've built more ARs then I'll ever admit to online and honestly the bolt action scares me more lol.

    Parts so far:

    PTG 6.8 Savage Bolt head
    ARP 20" 1:10 Savage barrels
    Savage .308 metal bottom magazines.

ARP makes some amazing barrels for ARs so if you don't know who they are... Time to educate yourself.

I'm thinking spiral fluted bolt because I've always wanted one...

I would start with the cheapest action you can find. Might want to consider a long action so you can swap for long action calibers if wanted or even a stevens that are cheaper but with the nice accutrigger with a nikon scope going for $420 is hard to beat. Definitely a 111 or 10 and skip the axis. I would skip the scout idea because it is not needed. there are scopes that can do the same as the scout in 2 magnification and then move to x6 with huge eye relief and fast ocular adquisition. I am saying because the 6.8 can be a great target and for long shots you will want a
more appropriate scope. What about one that can feed from AR magazines?

I thought about the AR Mag idea but like i said, first bolt venture.... Didn't know if that would be as reliable or if modification would make more work then it's worth.

well it is just an option but obviusly more work. but also magazines for bolt actions are not really affordable but also one might not need more than a couple. or even a blind mag or the stock.
I would concentrate on the rebarreling and then as I use the rifle figure out the rest. Always a decent rail beded to the action that is a given.

What are your thoughts on going with a full aluminum bedded stock from Hogue? Woodstock from 68F PMed me saying he could get me one direct at a savings. Also posted in a thread too I think.

I love teh hogue rubbery texture and positive grip. If one buys this one it is best to get the aluminum beded, the other is pure garbage. It is a decent stock the issue is in that price bracket you have the B&C medalist that is a very good stock. What I like about the B&C is that it is a tad heavier and puts a different "tune" on the barrels. Think of a full bedded stock as a huge tunning
fork. But how it feels to you, how you like it is subjective. For me also the comb I like it to be as high up as possible in line with the bore. It always makes a more accurate position by design.

See how the hogue drops down the butt and comb. Not too bad compared to others but also not straight.

B&C is straight like an arrow.

Funny you bring up the B&C stock because my Rem700 LTR 6.8 is nestled in a B&C and I do likey

Well hogue they make all sorts of schit while B&C solely focus is on stocks. SB stocks are rock solid and possibly the best value in the market.
