Not really sure I understand what the standoff is for... shooting while up against somebody's chest or in their rib cage?

That's my understanding of it. Reduces risk of the slide being pushed out of battery in close quarters use.

Ah, that makes more sense now, thanks. I wasn't thinking about taking it out of battery.

Did a quick search as I had same question. Article mentions 1) helps prevent support hand from going in front of muzzle, and 2) may support future longer slide models. If I can find link I'll post it.
